HID, LPS, and preheat fluorescents forever!!!!!!

Just curious about this because I am interested in seeing if it can work well on a F40T12 preheat ballast using RDC lampholders?

Running 800 mA lamp on preheat will just run the lamp at half the power. Second I would not use F40 Preheat ballast as those ballast is getting harder to find. HO ballast is still plentyful. HO lamps can be preheated, F24T12 HO and F30T12 works decently on two 14-20 watt preheat chokes in parallel The 6 ft HO 85 watt would work on older full power UK preheat ballast. Is in old days all 6 footer 85 watt Tubes were around before it got rerated for 75 watt tubes
And I am currently preheating a F96T12HO on my 8 foot 125 watt British made pop pack here in the USA. But that fitting for a while ran 120 watt Kino flo tubes and that tube is even expensive in the US. And it also cost $125 a tube to import 125 watt GE fluorescent tube into the US. This fitting due to leading cap do have problems in the US When i was expermenting with this 125 watt fluorescent ballast and 5uF cap. 7.2 uF was runing my lamps at 300 watts And ballast seem to run on bit of hot side. I expermented reducing cap value it got it down to 790 mA. From that point on I ran 110 watt HO on it and running on 60 Hz. Also I had interesting results from a lamp life test on HO sign job and the HO on preheat. What gets me why my philiips alto go mercury starve on sign job lasted 9 months, and on Preheat it going 18 months and still going until I have to move. And I am using that lamp from same batch. Life tested at same time.

I am actually talking about the characteristics of F48T8 HO tubes and NOT F48T12 HO tubes.

If that the case F48T8 at 110 volt 425 mA U might have some problem esp on 2 lamp rapid start It only 200 OCV how rapid start works is using the ocv Using cathode heating to lower the ignition point Of the fluorescent tube then it fires on the availble OCV U should be able to preheat this lamp no problems I had a 8 foot one and experimenting on my pop pack did Not go so well and at time when i am pushig 285 watts into it I eol a tube with in 8 hours. It was fastest From new to EOL In a day show. It was kinda funny that somthing took years eol and did it in one day is kinda neat.

I heard or read somewhere that F48T8 & F96T8 HO lamps were 430ma. I have a couple F96T8 HO's, and run one of them on a 2xF54T5 HO ballast (wired for its 1-lamp mode). Seems to work quite well.
A F48T8 HO lamp will likely overdrive a F40T12 ballast, just like a F32T8 would. (haven't tested it yet since I've never came across any F48T8's )

When I did calculate the voltage, I dod get a voltage rating of 103v for the operating voltage. That does seem like a very close match to the F40T12 voltage.

I got 93v for a F40T12, and 102v for a F48T8 (assuming its 430ma), if that's what it actually ended up running at, you'd be overdriving the ballast (assuming its HPF (underdriving if its LPF)) basically it'll "see" that as a lamp longer than 4-feet)

I only see a voltage difference of just 9 volts!!! I only see a 9% difference in the operating voltages of a F40T12 and a F48T8 HO tube. I do not see why such a small voltage difference would cause a ballast burnout. I do get told by Medved that the tolerance for most electrical components should be within 15%. From this data, I do see that the F48T8 HO tube rated at 44w should be safe to use on a F40T12 preheat ballast using a FS4 starter for the lamp.

@WorldwideHIDCollectorUSA: The one thing I also forgot to add last night is that in addition to the electrical spec's, there's also the fact you're talking a T8 vs a T12, and as a general thing T8 will appear to a T12 ballast as a longer lamp, so it might not run at the given spec. (depends on things like the fill gases as well). Personally I wish the F48T8 HO's were easier to find (no stores here sell them, and the few that appear on eBay are rip-off costs)...because by now I woulda already got a few, and one of the tests would deff be running on a F40T12 ballast. ![Smiley :)](/Smileys/default/smiley.gif) (just like I tried a F54T5 HO on a F40T12 ballast)

Does Home Depot in your area have them? The one in my area still stocks the 4ft HO lamps. I believe Lowe's also did and maybe still has them. They're around $6 CAD per lamp here.

@joseph_125: Its been quite awhile since I last looked for them at either store. I know at one time both HD & Lowes had the 4' T12 HO's, but neither had the T8 version. I think I'll make a point to take a good look next time I'm there(assuming ofcourse I remember).

I do still see some T8 HO lamps online still and I might want to convert some troffers to HO fluorescent.
