GTE Sylvania lamps « on: January 17, 2009, 09:18:55 AM » Author: gmercury2000
I came across some NOS 100 watt Sylvania merc lamps. When did Sylvania stop putting GTE on the etch? I have very good idea when but am just curious. Some of the lamps are from March 1975 and they have the GTE on the etch and the others are from July 1975 so I would strongly guess it was in that time frame or did they do it on some lamps and not others? The lamps are the same other than the dates.

I think around 1975 because my 1976 400 watt Sylvania lamp does not have a GTE in it....

However I think the package outside continued to have a GTE on it till the 80s

Ok! Am I right about the dates up above. I know they are from the 70's because they dont have the 4 in the ballast designation. The date code on the earlier is 63 and the others are 67.

Wouldn't they be March and July '76? Don't forget the Sylvania dates start at '71, '81, etc.

Did they start the same system over again in 1991 or just continue it?  I have an Osram Sylvania HPS lamp with a date code of 238 which is out of range of their 10 year system, but would put it at Oct 2000 if it continued on instead of resetting in 1991.

When Osram bought Sylvania...date codes changed.....any Sylvania lamps from  1993-1994 and after had different codes...which looks like b348 or something like that......that's the Osram date codes...the ones before were the GTE date codes

Does anyone know how to decode those?  This lamp has b238 on it.
