Possible defective LED lamp? « on: January 24, 2020, 11:36:44 PM » Author: HPS_250
I recently installed a Feit 12W 1100 lumen enhance LED lamp in my table lamp. Today, after being on for about 2 hours while I watched a movie, I touched it while turning off the switch.
The base and ballast housing were extremely hot and smelled like melting plastic. I unscrewed the bulb and am currently using a CFL in that lamp now. Should I stop using the bulb or is this normal?

I’ve always been interested in all kinds of lighting, mainly incandescent and HID, and especially all kinds of sodium lamps (HPS/LPS). I’ll tolerate LED but I’m not a fan of it.
I’m not proud to say that my city has Devolved to LED.

Stop using the bulb and return it.A properly running LED shouldn't smell like burnt plastic and not be hot.

I’ll probably return it. It just smelled like burning plastic if I took it out and sniffed the base.

you should screw it into a 1000 watt HPS fixture to see if you can "fix" it.

I don’t have a 1000W HPS ballast, but that would be cool to see what would happen to the LED lamp! Yesterday I left it on for a few hours to see if it was still overheating, and the base gets hot, but it was actually the rubber “skirt” on the screw base that smelled, not the plastic ballast housing.

Was this base down?  It does sound like it may have been overheating, though the neck area of LED lamps can get quite warm, and even hot if run base up in a fixture with a shade.  They typically have an aluminum heat sink under the plastic to dissipate heat from the diodes and driver.

I was using it base down. I know that the base is supposed to get warm, but this one seemed oddly hot.

With the base down, it will run cooler that way, so it suggests that the lamp is indeed faulty in some way.!  :-\
