Safe to use HPS bulbs when getter has broken off and resting on outer envelope? « on: December 14, 2019, 06:08:02 PM » Author: cameroncafe10a
Title essestially explains my question. I have several HPS (70w Philips SON-T) bulbs where they have obviosuly taken a hit at some point and the getter inside has broken off and is now rattling inside the outer glass envelope. Are these bulbs still fine/safe to use?

As long as it doesn’t short out some things in it, it should be fine.

Without the getter, the vacuum inside the outerbulb won't be maintained and the lamp will glow SOX color for several hours until the arctube seals fails.

Thanks for the replies, I thought it would be fine. Just wanted to make sure.

I think you might have misunderstood what happened to the bulb. The getter is still inside the bulb, but it has broken free from where it was welded and is now rattling around inside the bulb.

That's good, don't have to dispose of them now  :)
