It seems everyone in my area will replace 400 watts of "old-tech" lighting with 500 watts of LED lighting, then leave it on 24/7!
Seattle City Light doesn't even maintain their central lighting systems anymore, there's many areas in Seattle that have dayburning LED lighting, and it's been that way for over 5 years.

500w LED street lights? Cree go up to 225w~. GE max out at 278w~. Cooper is up to 382w~. AEL up to 388w~. That’s for cobraheads. The majority I’ve seen so far max out just under 400w.

And leaving them on 24/7 is just sheer idiocy. I find that hard to believe unless they got a bad batch of photocells that go dayburning too soon. They need to get their photocell problems sorted out and get better ones.

You're being too literal. I mean 400 watts OF, and 500 watts OF, not a 500 watt single fixture. It's just an example.

And yes, a gov't owned utility absolutely will defer maintenance and repair on malfunctioning equipment.

From the instructions I looked at in the first ebay link, it appears that the lens that clamps onto the head, has the LED module built into it, and also the heatsink. So while it appears you could use any clip on optics on the head itself, there wouldn't be a way to actually mount the LEDs without having the original lens installed.

Those ones even have a drain hole in case you can't achieve a water-tight seal.

Just wondering, I have an old gumball that I want to use as a yard light when we build our next house. I'll probably just use a high-intensity LED retrofit in it, but the thought also occurred to me that these GEs might be able to have a gumball lens attached. The Evolve would look "OK" with a gumball as long as the PC wasn't installed (the PC makes the unit look awkward)
