CFLs seem to dim out over time, due to the slight blackening of the tube. If you replace a CFL with a lot of hours on it with a brand new one of the same wattage, the light will be about 20% brighter! I've noticed this with several CFLs from different manufacturers.

The low diameter of the tube (T3 and now becoming T2) can explain a fast blackening. I also suppose that the high voltage pulse used to start the lamp makes a lot of sputerring from the electrodes.

ok. but i thought only some cfls use high pulses of energy when the fist start; also i thought that this problem was being phased out.

It's only a supposition. I don't know how the CFL gears works.

i actually think that it is the sputter from the electrodes because mos cfls i use are instant start. this makes the electrodes sputter, kinda like on a MV lamp.

That's why I believe that an high voltage pulse used to start the CFL...

The current GE spirals that has "instant start" some of them seem to be more of a "quick programmed start"

The newer cfls that are on the market don't blacken as quickly. I have a N:Vision EXDO-13 from about 3 years ago that is on every night in one of my porch lights (my 1st cfl) and it hasn't blackened yet. On the other hand i have a 4 or 5 year old EDSO-14 commercial electric that was the preivous model to the EXDO-13 and it is blackened from about 5 hrs of use per day compared to on all night with 3 years.
