The future of street lighting is Induction, not nasty HPS lights or cr@ppy LED lights! Preheat CFL's should make a comeback!

First, welcome to Lighting-Gallery!
So, a self-ballasted MV lamp is a normal MV lamp with a incandescent filament in serie. It serves to regulate the current, like a ballast would do with a normal mercury lamp. A self-ballasted lamp has a better CRI (color rendering index), but is less efficient than a normal mercury vapor lamp.
Hope this helps!

Welcome to Lighting Gallery.
Yes provided it's at or below the wattage rating on the fixture. Meaning you can't put a 160w SBMV lamp on a 40w rated fixture. 100w SBMV can be installed in a 100w rated fixture or a 150w one. Hopes that helps.

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech? LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).
LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

Since I don't live in US, I can't tell you which store you can go at, maybe Home Hardware, but they are expensive...

Look for commercial installation material distributors, they are usually able to at least order them (in Czech Republic i use an e-shop www.e-light.cz - specialized for lighting)
