Is the PL36w fluorescent lamp basically the energy saver version of the PL39w? If so, is it kind of situation in which the PL36w may overdrive a magnetic Rapid Start ballast, like an F34T12 lamp can overdrive an F40T12 ballast? And also, are there noticeable operation differences between a PL36w and PL39w? (ex: PL36w dimmer than PL39w) I want to know because I'm about to own 3 "Sadelite" desk lamps, and the last desk lamp will have PL39w lamps in it, while the other 2 will have PL36w. All 3 will have HPF magnetic Rapid Start ballasts suitable for them.

36W is a standard version of PL-L which I think it can also be run on F40T12 preheat ballasts. There is no such a thing PL-L 39W. There is PL-L 40W which operates on dedicated electronic ballasts.

From what I can see, the 39w versions seem to be the same size as the 36w versions. There are much, much more 36w lamps available though, so I do understand that 36w lamps should be labeled as standard

I don't know if the wattage difference is just something to do with the particular ballast or what but I have one of these lamps and it's marked for BOTH wattages, says right on it "GE BIAX F36BX/835 F39BX/SPX35/RS Made in USA.

@Wide-lite 1000, yeah... I saw that too in search results on Ebay as well. I would also assume that it depends on the ballast, but with the link I provided to the one for sale on Ebay, that lamp in particular only says F39BX/SPX41 lol The level of confusion for me is slowly increasing, but I'm beginning to think the wattage depends solely on the suitable ballasts for them. (One ballast would operate the lamp at 36w, another ballast would operate the lamp at 39w.)

Yeah, it's probably like the 40/50w mercs, different ballast, different wattage, Same bulb

I also see this same situation with 24w PL-L lamps also being rated for 27w operation.
