We call that mixture of rain and snow sleet, and it's not very nice.  >:(

Here it is just called rain/snow mix .lol.
Sleet here is snow that melted on the way down & then re-froze forming little ice pellets (basically its like tiny hail)

The worst thing we get is 'freezing drizzle' : drizzle that freezes the instant it lands ... coating everything with a thin layer of ice. .EEK. (gotta say I hate that stuff .lol. )

The snow here was nearly gone, but today it’s snowing and we nearly have an inch but it’s still snowing!

Severe weather is back! This week was absolutely crazy in Southern California. Especially Ventura county where I am. Last weekend, we started out with 90+ degree temperatures in January, then we got 70 MPH winds, and today we got hail and light snow. Snow here is so weird! That’s not the end of it either, later this week there are 3-4 inches of rain forecast.

I’ve always been interested in all kinds of lighting, mainly incandescent and HID, and especially all kinds of sodium lamps (HPS/LPS). I’ll tolerate LED but I’m not a fan of it.
I’m not proud to say that my city has Devolved to LED.

Wow snow! We had a few drizzles of it yesterday but it quickly melted away. It supposed to be VERY cold this week but it’s not expected to snow.

Snow in a place where it was just 93 degrees a week before!  :o
 It has melted here (mostly) by now. I saw that the northeast was getting very cold this week!

Yes, VERY different from the 93 degrees you are experiencing!

@HPS_250, I think cold weather in general in California is a rare thing, but I doubt that was hail that you experienced. You probably encountered sleet,
which later changed over to snow. Hail is typically associated with powerful thunderstorms. Sounds like a strong cold front swept through there.

Woah! We’ve had one instance of thundersnow during this winter season.

One of the sites I visit on a regular basis is a storm/weather Discord...

This came across just a bit ago:
There's been a tornado in Alabama near Birmingham. Damage has been reported.
More storms in the area.

@Xmaslightguy, yup you're right. Looks as if a large tornado just did serious damage tonight in Alabama from what I'm seeing online.
Possible videos of the tornado have surfaced as well... haven't seen those videos yet though

We've been hearing about things like that over here too. Over up in Far-north Queensland there have been several large cyclones that have been near the area. Luckily the damages were not that severe but there is one forming off the Gulf of Carpentaria near Mount Isa. I think it is part of the El Nina phase that is affecting the county as we have been having a very cold summer. The average weather for where I live earlier this month was about 15 degrees with rain and wind.

@suzukir122:
Yep.. I was watching as people on that Discord posted live updates & pictures from that area.
I did watch some videos today as well. There's deff some pretty bad damage down there.. looks like EF2/EF3 level damage to me.

@LightsDelight:
Could very well be part of La Nina (also known as the negative phase of El Nino).. since it does have a global effect on weather.

There calling for snow 5 out of the 10 days in the 10 day forecast here in upstate South Carolina  :o It's looking like a much colder than average February here for me with a solid chance of snow in the next week and a half. I enjoy the snow and chilly weather, but I'm sure my local grocery stores will be cleaned out of the bread and milk.

An old wives' tale says that it always snows within 10 days of a winter thunderstorm. I had a nice overnight thunderstorm January 26-27.

The same storm system produced a powerful tornado in Birmingham, Alabama and widespread severe thunderstorms in the rest of Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina on January 26. I always worry when there's severe weather in that area because I have friends who live in Alabama. Everyone is okay this time  :)
