What HPS should I get? « on: September 29, 2018, 02:26:36 AM » Author: Cole D.
So since I got a MV fixture, my next thing is to get an HPS fixture. I could get a yardblaster for $44 or so at Lowes or Home Depot. But I prefer a utility style fixture. Ideally I'd like a cobrahead, but they're too big so I'll probably get a NEMA head. There's a new GE 201SA on eBay that would be about $50 with shipping, but it needs a lamp and photocell for it. But since I already have a GE head maybe another brand? There's a Cooper NEMA there now I could make an offer on. But I'd need to get it cheap because I would need a refractor for it too and again a photocell and lamp.

Any ideas? A post top would be nice, but again too big to store it.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

Honestly, go for a Cobra head, IMO you won't regret it. I see less and less of them that are HID, and I would not be surprised if they stop making them soon. I know you can get a descent price on an AEL with a 150 watt 120 volt reactor ballast.

I'd love a cobra head, probably an AEL 115 or a Westinghouse 4th gen OV-15. It's easier to store the NEMA heads though, because you can put the hood part inside the refractor and then in the box so it's compact.

I have a Thorn Beta 79, brand new from eBay, from a contractor who had one left over after finishing a job.

Some people have criticised them, saying they can let in water, but that's not a problem for me as it's only ever going to be used indoors  :D

I can find a HPS cobrahead very cheapy at metal recycling yard.  I saved quite a few of them over the years including the OVW.  I get Tx dot and 3 utilty
company scrap when i go sell scrap metals.
