Light bulbs in exhaust hood « on: September 15, 2018, 08:03:06 AM » Author: Cole D.
I was wondering, the range hood in my house has a 60W incandescent bulb in it. But can you even use a CFL or LED bulb in a range hood because of the heat from the stove? Most range hood I see use incandescent or halogen. I've never seen one with fluorescent lights either.

Although the exhaust hood in my school kitchen, which was huge, had those vaportight style lights under it, and they had CFLs in them.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

It is not much the heat, but the moisture what is the problem there. The thing is, for the clouds rising from a pot, all above is a "cold spot" for the water to condense. The incandescents generate enough heat to prevent this, but the CFL, nor LEDs are hot enough to become protected. Plus their ballasts are rather moisture sensitive (paper PCB, small trace distances and mains voltage)...

We've a 13W integrated CFL in our stove hood, since several years, I'll guess six.  It is a one which is "suitable for use in totally enclosed luminaires".  No problem so far.  :-)

I don't think this would be an issue. I've retrofitted almost every light source in my house to LED, save for decorative vintage incandescents, the LPS in the garage, and applications that cannot/safely accommodate LED. (ie microwave, gas oven, wax melters.) My range hood is actually the bottom of the microwave, and uses a rather uncommon style halogen bulb. Because of this, I have opted to leave it as-is, but if they made a decent/affordable LED retrofit, I wouldn't be opposed to using one.
