Do you ever see streetlights in the countryside roads or rural areas? I never have seen any but wondered if other parts of the country or other countries have them.

However, although there are no streetlights, I'd guess at least half of houses I see in rural areas have some kind of security light, most commonly a NEMA bucket light rented from the utility or sometimes a yard blaster.

Its pretty common in the UK, a classic example is here.
This one is in a place called Llandudno, North Wales, (pronounced `clandidno` by the Welsh), its also where you will find most of the older stuff, untouched by LED conversions in Britain

Intersecting out in rural areas here have streetlights.. Most are MV around here. In 175W.

@AngryHorse, I kind of thought the UK probably had lights in the country areas, I've seen a few on here. Those are really nice fixtures, and I looked at your other photos too, very cool.

I know of a medium-sized town in Nebraska that uses almost entirely 250 and 400w mercury vapor for the streetlights. They are very well maintained. If something happens to them they replace them with 250w PSMH AEL 125's.

Isn't there a member on this site that lives around there... I could of sworn somone lives around an area that's almost entirely MV still...

They wouldn't be on the road other than on major intersections. Most farm places have a light in the middle of the yard. Some are utility rentals some customer owned. I try to maintain any mercury lights otherwise I put in HPS 201SA's for the most part. I have put in a few of the caretaker led's when the customer insists on led.

In Florida, it's usually a simple bucket light when it's in a rural area, but sometimes cobraheads are used.

In Germany: Yes, as long as there are residential buildings. Also bus stops a bit away are candidates for being lit.

And these can be "systems" that consist of just a single pole with a luminaire plus a box with the photocell switch and the meter.

I was thinking again about the use of lighting at rural intersections. Sometimes they can be more of a hindrance than a benefit as when there isn't any lighting apart from vehicle headlights you can tell if another vehicle is approaching the junction from much further off.

Fortunately here the craze of illuminating all "dangerous" road spots never took up (the "craze" was the strongest, as far as I know, mainly in the 50's and 60's, at that time in the "socialistic" society "people don't need cars"). Sometimes even a bad thing may have good sides...

Are there any older NEMA head installations that you come across? Or were there ever NEMA heads with other than the bucket optics used in rural areas? I was just wondering, since that's what I usually think of when I see those bucket lights, is farms and such. Whenever I drive in the country it seems nearly every house has one of those fixtures in the yard. I've never seen any gumballs or teardrops though, maybe they were too expensive for such uses.
