75W Mercury lamp puts off Ozone « on: May 06, 2018, 07:27:40 PM » Author: HomeBrewLamps
I've run it a couple times on the 70W Halide ballast and have noticed the Ozone smell... I don't notice this with other mercury lamps.. is this lamp more dangerous?

Well, it could just be the heat from the lamp burning off whatever is on the surface, otherwise it is a symptom that the lamp is producing UV somehow.

Mercury lamps uses soft glass (For low wattages) or hard glass (For high wattages) outer bulbs so shouldn't produces UV-C at all.

"The smell of ozone" could be in reality caused by many chemicals, not just the ozone. If it is reactive and does not have its own other distinct smell, it will always smell that way (the ozone, HCl, NOx,...).
And generally all are damaging to the body to some extend, so better to avoid.

In case of the hot burning mercury lamp it would be some heat degrading cellulose (the most common dust at homes - coming from all the clothing,...), maybe mixed with body fats (coming from the lamp handling).

My 160W SBMV lamp at my father home, which is hotter than HomeBrewLamps's lamp (Which I don't know if it is a 75W mercury or a 70W MH lamp as the subject and the content says different), being have a tungsten filament in additional to the arctube, and have very low lm/w, don't produces any smell when operating.

It is a 75W Mercury Vapor bulb that was being operated on a 70W Metal Halide ballast...

Because it is heated regularly and really a lot, the heat clean it out so then there is not the thick residue just decomposing slowly.
Instead it forms single puff of smoke, that is distinct in other way, and then the bulb is clean (from things that like to slowly decompose by heat).
