My girlfriend says that I have too many fluorescent lights... « on: April 26, 2018, 06:58:24 AM » Author: F96T12 DD VHO
Let’s just add them all together and do a brief uh... look over
All of my 6-8 foot lamps are leaning against the wall in my apartment living room leaving no room for pictures or decorations the tubes are enough
Any lamps under 6 feet are in a U-Haul Storage unit and I have boxes of lamps up to the ceiling and filling up the back of the room progressing to the front door of the unit
The lamps are currently taking almost half the unit and I made an isle to get in
Is this to much
What should I do?

Probably she think that there is too much light from all the 6-8 foot lamps. Common fluorescent lamps size and wattage for homes, are F20T12 or F40T12 or FC8T9 or FC5T9.
The 6-8 foot lamps, are mainly used by schools and commercial places.

The 6-8 foot lamps are just leaning against the wall, they don’t light up
Sorry for any confusion

Just curious, but why do you need all those lamps?  What purpose do they serve?

Well, at first I started collecting lamps about 5 years ago and I got my first 6 and 8 foot lamps about 3 years from today’s date
I guess I got kinda carried away and now I probably have more lamps than the fluorescent section at Lowe’s
Then I started finding lots of vintage lamps and never thought of to get rid of the newer ones

I guess I got carried away and didn’t pay attention to how many lamps I have

Don't collect anymore.. just run the ones you have to EoL and enjoy the show!  They hold no $$$ value, and never will in your lifetime.

Money isn't everything. We just collect lamps that we like. Whether they're worth anything or are super-rare or not is irrelevant.

Having something in itself is not a problem (unless it is something that poses a safety risk). Being weird with it like having lots of.. Your girlfriend may appreciate or not appreciate it, that's up to you two to work out. Unless it takes up space you'd better live in or put to better other uses, or unless you spend too much time with the lamps and too little with the girlfriend, there is no OTHER problem here

Since we live together we are always together and I mostly spend time with her and her sisters

As a fellow lighting enthusiast, I'd say... cool it down with the lamp collecting. If you've got more lamps than
all the lighting currently on sale in lowes... in such a small space that's obviously needed in your apartment, hold back
on collecting lamps until you find more space to enable yourself to collect more. I agree with RyanF40T12 on this one... you
could just run the ones you have to EOL. That being said... DO NOT link trigger start ballasts together to try to light
an F96T12 lamp, or do anything that could potentially threaten the safety of you, or your girl.

If she or sisters feel threatened one of them or whoever is there will unplug whatever I’m doing or just stare at me until I start sweating then I stop

Again, don't do anything that will threaten the safety of you, or your girl. Electrical current, as we all know,
can be a very dangerous thing. Your girl unplugging your project while it's running, could also prove to be a bad move
on her part. That would be a worse case scenario. We want to try to reduce the chances of worse case scenarios.
This is also why you should hold back on lamp collecting until you have more space to do so. Prevent the worse case scenarios
from happening, brother

I have a fairly modest collection, which mainly consists of discharge lamps, although I do have a fair few incandescents. They are low enough in number that they all fit into one cupboard, but I am planning on putting some shelves up to display the best of them.

@trencheel303 - you'd hate it here then, if you don't like clutter  :D

To be honest, if I buy fluorescent lighting, I don't ever just let them sit around. I USE them. lol
As an avid lighting enthusiast, I do understand just collecting lighting, but I could never just let my lights
sit around on a wall. I have to see them in use, and drive them until EOL... that way, I get start up shows
each and every day, along with EOL shows when the time comes. Although this is not the case with metal halides or any
other kind of lighting relevant to them, I do still get start up shows with them.
So in other words, I don't just collect, I use. lol

Hey, I understand wanting to use lights, I really do. But I don't want to ruin them by running them into the ground, either. Unlike some people on here, I just don't understand the fascination with seeing lamps go EOL. When a lamp dies, especially if it's an old and rare one, I go into mourning  :(

I do love looking at lamps and just handling them. I do run them up occasionally see my thread Lamp Of The Day, but I don't use them up until they die, that way there's nothing to leave for future generations. If previous collectors and the like had used up all their lamps, we wouldn't have any of them today to enjoy.

We must preserve old technology; the way things are going, in 20 years time people won't know what incandescent and HID lamps even were  :'(
