Help w/Acrylic Refractor Repair! « on: July 08, 2008, 05:40:48 PM » Author: fran4001
Hello gang! Been a while, but got in the garage this weekend to un-store, clean up and photograph some more fixtures for us all and came across another unpleasant surprise, same as when I found my shattered M250R2 lens a while back... :'(  Anyway, this time it's my '70 GE 175w Merc NEMA with Lexan type V refractor. Cracked apart in three places. Of course, nobody knows a thing! Anyway, until the unlikely event of me finding another intact, these are all clean breaks and I can certainly glue it for the time being. Now, I tried superglue yesterday and it won't even begin to tack up or melt or stick at all. I've heard that maybe pure acetone will do it, but I'm wondering if anybody else here has had any success with clear glues or epoxies on their damaged lenses. Anybody????

I think they make a superglue specifically for plastic, but not sure how well it works on polycarbonate (Lexan). Also, before you try another glue, if possible, clean the old superglue residue off with nail polish remover and cotton cloth...use very little, as I'm not sure how it will react with Lexon. Also, I seen something called 'Weld-On #16 Plexiglas Glue'...supposed to bond very well. Try google.

Plastic Modelling Cement may work just as well.
