I just got a 100w HPS ballast similar to the one pictured. I should try making one of these...

also if the lamp you use comes with a weight in the base of it, ditch the weight, the ballast and ignitor is more than enough to keep the lamp on a table the weight would just make it harder to hide wiring.

looks nice, along with that desklamp i also have a 175W MV lamp lighting my room, I've also recently obtained a 400W MH and a 400W HPS lamp, and theres more where they came from lol, my room is by far the brightest on in the house, it's very unnecessary 400W but thats all found and they do a good job. Left to Right you got the 400W HPS, 175W MV, 400W MH and at the bottom left you got my 70W HPS deskie.

Where do you get one of those mounting arms? I want to make an indoor display for my lights but the yardblaster arm I got at Menards isn't enough to support it.

I can scrounge around for a mounting arm, theres a ton of lamps and ballasts where i go, Its a junkyard, I'm not really supposed to be there but they just leave them outside in the elements to rot so it's not like they care much, most of the lamps laying around have those mounting arms with the inbuilt ballast and capacitor, so i dont know if those would be helpful to you or not.

You can order them at an electric supply store from GE. Also, you can ask your local utility journeyman lineman if he has any that he has removed/replaced. Craigslist, and eBay has them pop up every once in a while. While hard to obtain, not impossible. The cheap Home Depot ones aren't designed for anything bigger than a 150w HPS NEMA. Make sure you hit a stud in the wall if you buy one of the cheap Home Depot arms.

Added a power switch to it, so i no longer need to plug and unplug the lamp, i also removed the old remaining switch assembly on the back of the lamp shade itself

thats been on my mind aswell, I cant really think of anything to put there... the thing that was previously there was a sand weight but that would not fit back into the bottom now, and it is un-needed due to the ballast, ignitor and lamp assembly, It sits flat on the table so at the moment it works fine, but yeah a plastic cover would be nice any ideas would be nice.
