The other day, I went to Home Depot to get a couple of extra 100w HPS lamps, and I was informed that they only carry probe-start Metal Halides 250-400w. They no longer stock Mercury and only 50-70w Medium base HPS. The salesman told me that I might could get them online, but he is required to sell LED conversion kits which are $49.99 starting. He only had medium base but you could buy an adapter to fit it into Mogul Base. Boy that made me mad. They used to have the widest range of HID lamps from Mercury to Metal Halide, all wattages. It made me mad because it seems like even large home supply/hardware stores are getting LEDisease. They have displays of scores of different LED lamps. BTW, sorry I haven't posted in a while. Gotta fix my computer, and my phone is hardly the best tool for looking at this site.

Maybe H.D. HQ requires salespeople to sell LED conversion kits.

Yes its not looking good, factories don`t want to make them anymore, stores don`t want to sell them, even on-line suppliers are cutting down on what they stock, we could never get HID lamps in stores in the UK, it`s always been specialist lighting shops, (that would take weeks to get them), or electrical wholesale, so its not alot of difference here! But for you guys in the US I can imagine its quite a kick in the teeth!

Homedepot, only rents shelf space so it's the manufacturer deciding what to fill them with, and homedepot never had a house brand HID to compete so they don't really care about them...

His store manager.. If someone asks for an HID lamp that they no longer carry, he is required to attempt to sell LED conversions

I was at Home Depot today and they had HPS, MHs and MVs. Both mogul and medium base. I think that manager is full of it. Since I haven't seen any HID conversion kits to LEDs anywhere. http://www.lighting-gallery.net/gallery/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=0&pos=0&pid=131493

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech? LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).
LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

Hmmm. All Home Depot stores here sell HID.
Must be my particular region then. Kinda stupid if you ask me since most towns east of our Home Depot are rural areas and many people install and repair their own lighting. However, 4 out of 6 around our property are maintained by Ameren Illinois. The other 2; 1 is a 201SA 100w HPS that I bought and installed myself, and the other is a 175w Mercury Yardblaster. When it goes, I have a 175w Mercury 201SA (SAM17CL). The 100w 201SA HPS I installed is catalog number SAH10S1N21017 and I have an identical twin spare of that, and 1 SAH10S1N21181. I picked up a trick from Ameren and when the luminaire goes dead, I will use the lens that is on the current one and use it on the replacement.

I've noted by now that 201SAs with catalog numbers beginning in SAM are consumer versions, while SAH are generally (but not solely) used by utilities. But SAM are not used by utilities. SAH cannot be obtained by consumers from GE unless it is a warranty exchange. (I tried, and unless I had a "customer number" they would not just sell me a new SAH10S1N21181) because those are manufactured and priced/packages for wholesale. I don't get it, but I don't care so much. Basically SAH are a consumer part built model priced cheaper for utility companies. Maybe I should try again, hopefully I will get someone who will sell it to me. I assume my money's as good as anybody's.

Structurally they are identical. The only difference is between the SAH10S1N21181 and SAH10S1N21017. The 1017 has a 160 joule MOV connecting the hot and neutral terminals, and the 1181 has no such MOV, but both of those are utility/industrial models.

Is there any justification for the MOV's presence ? On my experience MOV's fail (as result of too big impulse fo them to handle) way more often than magnetic ballasts. It makes no sense to put in MOVs as this would increase failures

Just surge suppression, and that's how they work, when you exceed there threshold voltage, the resistance drops and they dissipate a whole lot of current and let out there magic smoke, they will work again if you catch that magic smoke and put it back in there, and there is better surge suppression technology, but they are also looking at cost per unit and MOV's are cheap, but if you have constant power problems a ferroresonant constant voltage ballast might be the best option or adding a ferroresonant constant voltage transformer, they give you a beautiful light with no flickers or flashes, and can clamp a 5 kV surge with out missing a cycle, but they aren't the most efficient beast, but for a critical loads like an operating room they are very attractive simple options that last a long time..
