| What will happen if i screw a mercury vapor, hps, and turn it on?
Will the lamp explode, blacken, or do nothing?

Ur not being clear. Do you mean what will happens if you install one of those lamps directly on the mains? Mercury Vapor - Will explode. Possible the explosion will take the outer bulb with it. High Pressure Sodium - Likely nothing as it will need a high voltage pulse to start it. |

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).
LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

| I've tried it with an HPS before. It was as exciting as screwing in a dead light bulb. Without the 4kv pulse to strike the arc, nothing will happen.

BEWARE! Don't do that with the retrofit HPS lamps, as they have a slight chance of igniting on the mains! |

| Do it outside, at the end of the yard furthest from the house. Use a long extension cable with a fuse or breaker on it so that you don't overload the mains wiring. Wear googles and a dust mask, or else watch from inside behind a closed door.
Best to do it on July 4th when theres lots of fireworks going off - you don't want to end up with the police at your door because the neighbours think you are bomb-making!
PS: Don't forget to record it on camera and put the video on Youtube!

| If using your camera for the video. It's a good idea to have something bulletproof between the lamp and camera. A 3/4" Plexiglass of 1'X1' size will be more than enough.

| Yes MV will either explode or the leads on the ends of the arctube will simply vaporize.
HPS will do nothing, but Retrofit HPS will have a major damage...
doing it on MH probably will be the worst of all..........

LOL you think that's bad, I've hooked fluorescent tubes up to the mains before, lets see, an F34 ALTO, which resulted in a purple flash at both ends, lamp surprisingly SURVIVED  Second was a Chinese F6T5 it did the same thing only the lamp lost vacuum in this case lol |

If you want some real firepower, try a self igniting HPS. The arc tube won't do anything but the glowbottle contacts closing will create an instantaneous hard short across the mains Hundreds of amps will flow in the milliseconds it takes for the fuse or breaker to trip, and this will be enough for a LOUD BANG!! The contacts will vaporize instantly and the bottle/outer bulb will almost certainly shatter - but the arc tube will probably survive. |

| i've had three regent MV lamps blown because of accidental contact with Mains Voltage...and the pattern i notice is that the lead wire to the lower main electrode(next to the starter electrode)is the one that always vaporizes..the consistency makes me think its a saftey feature designed to cut power to the arctube to prevent it from exploding,just a theroy.
