Bending tough steel pipe « on: September 12, 2016, 02:48:00 AM » Author: Ash
I found some bent steel pipe, that i'd like to reshape into a bracket for a HID lantern :

So on the end with 2 bends i'd like to get one sharper bend and a longer straight section (instead of the other bend)

Pipe is 1 inch diameter, ~8ft long, 3mm wall thickness. I tried by sticking it into a hole in a concrete wall and pulling, it didnt move at all

How i bend this ?

You'll need this tool and a LOT of muscle! What you have is rigid conduit. I've done 1/2" rigid and it was hard. Can't imagine 1" one.

That or borrow/rent a powered conduit bender from an electrician in your area.

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

This is a water pipe originally, not electrical conduit. Thing is, round (pipe) steel conduit have not been used here for electrical installations since the 70s, and they dont bend water pipes (they use them straight and with elbows where needed), so nobody i know have such tool

Maybe a way to bend it is to heat it enough with a propane torch to where it will bend easier, but not melt.

I have tried that and found out the hard way that it destroys the pipe no matter what. I think the best thing to do here is use the conduit bender.

Yeah, I find bending pipe with just a torch tends to kink the pipe at the bend so I would either use the conduit bender (powered if available) or use a bending spring if you have to use a torch to bend.

A muffler shop should have a powered pipe bender that might be able to bend that pipe if you can't find a conduit bender
