Diehard MV, HPS, SOX & Preheat Fluorescent Fanatic

| Over the past few weeks I've continued restoring lights, finally got a 4x40w Daylite Adelaide, met another collector and plan to pick up more goodies for my collection. Among the items include some louvred fluorescent fixtures that use the very long PL lamps or Not-So-Compact CFLs as I like to call them. I'll keep a few in original condition for my collection, convert some to linear fluorescent and use the remainder as a source of spare parts for my stockpile.

| Made a bracket and base so i can put my Philips MLR 160w (mixed MV/incandescent with fluorescent reflector coating) pointing up to the ceiling. It gives a very nice indirect lighting with soft shadows, when i need extra light during the daytime (my windows are facing the east, especially when in summer time the big chestnut tree next to the house blocks a lot of light, it can be quite dark in here). For nighttime use, it's a bit much of course. All in all, it's an excellent way to make it as bright inside as it is outside.
The light quality is very good. CRI is 64ish but everything looks subjectively a lot better than with the 55-65 CRI fluorescent tubes.
I might eventually re-make this 'base' in such a way that it's nice and symmetrical, and more of a diamond shape. I'm quite decent at making things from brass tubing but i first have to make absolutely sure that the very hot lamp doesn't get close to the melting point of the solder, making the diamond-shape self destruct.
Side note: good lord i need to find a way to manage all those cables a bit better. That's the one thing i hate about having electronics as a hobby. Cables. Wires. Tangles. Everywhere. Inevitable. Infinite.

Found a slightly used crompton 58w T8 daylight tube on the side of the road. Idiot me dropped it on the floor thinking it was just a stick and shattered it  . Was my first and only 58w tube, it even had a unique etch with I different crompton logo. Oh and for the fact that this topic now has 1505 replies, if there isn't a server problem, we could just continue on this one and make it even longer! |

| Today I found these Korean made osram 36w pl-l in 865 near where I found the 58w tube. There were some more 36w linear tubes and some 250w HPS lamps but I had too many of them.

I went to Jowa Recycling today, a scrap and technical materials merchant in my city. It's a true maze with the walls being built with literally everything you can imagine. Some stuff has been there for decades, because new stuff is just stacked on top of old stuff if there's no valuable metal inside of it. I spotted a little box of bulbs, and fished out a nice spherical Philips ML160 lamp. It appears to be one without phosphor coating. Although the etch says just ML160 and philips 57500e/56, the wrapper says MLL160 which indicates a coated lamp. But with the spectroscope, i cannot see any spectrum lines that aren't either the mercury lines, or the filament continuous spectrum. There were many, MANY more things to see (and buy!). I think i even found a TL-X anti explosion fixture with the lamps still in it. Everything's for sale there. Valuable metals eventually get removed and sold as scrap, but many things remain there for years, sometimes decades. |

| Was on my way to get some bread when I spotted two guys cleaning a shop, that's always a good sign so I went up to them and asked if they were throwing out anything electrical, one nodded and pointed me to a box with a bunch of old sockets, holders and a 250 watt coated metal halide bulb, they didn't knew if it works but I got that + the E40 holder for free, thanked them and went to buy bread.
It's super dirty and covered in grease so will test it once it's clean.

Tried to recreate that bygone mercury look by running a collection of LED filament lamps next to an actual 80 watt mercury lamp! ……it’s impossible!, mercury is its own unique colour that can’t be copied or even gotten close to!, it’s even more infuriating trying to capture similarities on camera!  |

| I've noticed this myself, there's just nothing else that can replicate the colour of mercury lamps.
The output spectrum is just unique.

Turns out that bulb I got was a mixed light with metal halide and a filament that allows instant light and acts as ballast. It's a GE brand 250 watt made in Brazil, works just fine and indeed has an unique colour to it, starts as a regular frost glass incandescent then gradually gets the typical green-ish tint from the metal halide.  4200K temp and 52 Ra according to GE, I believe them. I might have cleaned it too much because it's super shiny now, I wanted to take some pictures while off but I can't without autodoxxing myself, which I won't do, and if I try to take pics while on all I get is a blurry bright egg and 50Hz flicker. |

 A self ballasted 250w Metal Halide? I thought those were typically Mercury Vapor? That would be awesome if there are filament based higher wattage self ballasted Metal Halide lamps out there.

Indeed. There are a number of Chinese-made halogen-ballasted MV lamps on the market that are advertised as MH but they aren't. |
