With diffuser T5 may be the better choice (by efficacy it is, but then should be counted in other considerations like costs and so on)

Then why are the companies pushing T5?

Hype around the thing itself, same as with LEDs. I guess also they have higher markup on the prices of T5 gear and tubes, before the market pushed them down for as long as it had with T8

But for a change T5 are really good or best choice for many applications, mainly where there is optic system that hides the tube. The reasons why to sometimes choose T8 for such applications is possibility to retrofit existing lumianires, availability of more types of T8 tubes with different Phosphors, as T5 are made only with Triphosphors, and costs

My primary thought was glare - I'd assume the tubes to be installed in open reflector luminaires or with flat clear Glass cover. When somebody is looking up towards a high shelf, especially when trying to read something on a box that stands up there, the lower glare of T8 is desirable

I found an article about light pollution, that, amazingly better,  blames the LED technology as a cause that worsen the situation, because of its glare levels compared to older lighting technologies: (Google translated article) (Original untranslated article) . Surprisingly, I almost didn't found in this article any false information or BS content compared to articles like this and this .

Now I just need a way to show them this information.

The blue rich spectrum of LED lighting can also cause this in the long terms.
