CMH on MH ballast « on: June 07, 2016, 03:07:27 PM » Author: wattMaster
Can you run a CMH bulb on a regular MH ballast? I looked up this problem on Google, But the answers were on weed growing sites, Which I just can't handle!  >:(
I want to know because when I try to plan a fixture, I need high CRI.

Based on gear over here - Choke+ignitor Pulse Start :

For 100W+ there is rarely any problem

For 35/50/70W check the ratings of the specific lamp - Some of them specifically require Electronic, but i think most of them can work on Magnetic

For 20W most (all ?) lamps are rated Electronic only. They maybe work well on Mag ballast but i dont know how reliable that would be, esp in regards to lamp stability from getting to run too hot or too cold, which Electronic ballasts control by measuring the lamp temperature (through the arc parameters) and correcting the driving output acordingly

No, I am talking about the regular MH ballssts, Not Pulse Start.
I wanted, for example, My 400 Watt Lumatak Electronic ballast (For non
Puse start lamps) on a 400 watt CMH light.
I don't care for Puse Start lamps right now.

First, I know what it's like googling stuff on HID lighting. All you get is weed growing websites, which is really annoying and useless.
Second, no they cannot run on probe start ballasts. Why are you wondering?

Sorry, didnt see that. What wattage is the fixture you want to use the lamp in?

400.
Or 250.
One possible use for CMH lamps is that sports room with MV lights in Poland that was originally incandescent, I can't find it right now.
Why can't thay make CMH lamps run on Probe Start?

Do you have around $40 to spend? If so, look at the pulse start ballast on 1000bulbs.
Here is a cheap 400w PSMH ballast:

Not right now.
I am only imagining possible fixtures, So I would only get the bulb.
Or keep It for my collection.
I wanted to test my 250 watt and 400 watt MH lamps on the Lumatek ballast, And I have a thread for that because of the explosion risk.

Do you have any PSMH lamps? Try them in the light, and if they strike, then a CMH lamp should work.

Nope, Pulse start lamps seem to be Alien Technology here.
All you can find in stores are Probe Start.
What's the voltage needed to start Pulse Start lamps? The ballast says "4000V Max."

CMH are Pulse Start, except maybe some retrofits. There is no way to include the probe in a ceramic arc tube without doing big tradeoffs against the advantages of CMH technology. And without them, there is allready the ordinary Probe MH anyway

Depending on the starting system used, not in all of them the ballast is getting the lamp starting voltage. With Superimposed ignitors (the standard type of MH ignitor here, can be used for HPS too), the ballast never sees anything higher than its own OCV - all the high voltage is going to the lamp only. In which case you will be able to use a non HV rated ballast, if its current specs match

But with US ballast ratings i dont think there is another one that matches the Pulse Start lamp spec, except the proper one anyway

And do you know if it will work on this electronic ballast?
Also, What retrofits are you talking about? That might be my golden ticket.

There are no games with Electronic HID ballasts. If it is not for the correct lamp type or wattage then it is not supposed to work togeter
