The mainboard is an intel d865gbf. It also has Windows XP SP1. If I got a newer service pack, would it maybe fix the issue?

Try to download the Microsoft Windows XP SP3 from the web site to your thumbdrive and update from there.  Seriously, I recommended that you remove some junk from Add/Remove program at the Control Panel before you attempt to install the latest service pack.
