I'm feeling like I just can't figure out others' true interests and mindsets to make meaningful discussions. I was actually happier with my lighting interest before I got online in 1998 and began meeting others with the same interests. Is this a site to enjoy cool interesting lamps or a site to discuss something like a boring pack of CFLs bought new at Home Depot? I prolly know more about lamps than most members here (but James and Max know more about lamp science than me and I've been learning from them) and for years I've been trying to help the members here date their lamps and educate about the various lamps and the evolution in design features, and also different design features between manufacturers. But man i really suck at chats and discussions and I'm tired of feeling like I don't get enough in return.

It's both. The reason something like a modern CFL may get more discussion than a lamp of a rare or unusual type is because all of us have more experience with and knowledge in the former lamp, so we will have more to say about it. I can't visualize, though, how one could be happier without having others to share their interests with than they are with? Even though we might have different specific interests and mindsets, we do all share the same general interest, and that's what brings us together, and I think it even helps broaden each other's own interests.

Ahhhh now I get it, I never realized that I was doing things beyond the level of knowledge of most members here. Man it took me a lifetime of trying to figure out why things conflict with me and why I could not lead a pack of people without them looking puzzled at me. Not just lighting but other areas as well. And you, TheMaritimeMan, is much younger than me and it amazes me you understood the social aspect better than me. I'm still trying to learn lol.

I also love the "collective knowledge" of people here. I know and care little about street and urban lighting and incandescent lamps, but still find them interesting and do appreciate the passion of those who collect them. My vast collection is partially interesting and vintage and partially boring and modern. I value the "friends" I have made through this site and the things I have learned and shared here. Everyone here should feel appreciated, even though we don't often come out and say it.

i think its just that different things interest different people like no doubt some people would look at me and think im weird because i collect street lights but its only weird to them because they dont hold the same interest every person has there own interest and things that excite them

Thanks again for the replies, I'm still baffled at myself why I failed to recognize that even within L-G collectors can have different areas of interest. Only when I was directly told, I would understand. Since I am now aware of this, I may be less likely to complain and rant like this in the future, hopefully.

Or another answer to the "title" question: The beautiful thing needs no comment ts to be beautiful. But when something is stinking like a s***, people just tend to poke their stick in it, very often to show, how worse it still could smell...

Being an older member myself, I sometimes have to remind myself that the younger folk here have been born during the onset of the "electronic" era of lighting...so it's only natural they will relate to newer stuff that I might find boring. Also, not everyone here is necessarily interested in the history....yet. When I was younger, I wasn't so much interested in the history, collectable aspects, or could grasp the science as much as whatever I could get my hands on and do experiments with and make work. Only later years did I care to really expand my knowledge.

G'day Don
Yes I'd have to agree there. I was only inetrested in my personal history with lighting. But as I grow older (mid 40's now) I ahve become very much more interested in the history of manufacturing. The LG and it's members are largely responsible for this but also my personal friends. Several members here are skilled in the science of it, but I'm not quite there yet myself.

I was only inetrested in my personal history with lighting. I was the same before I came here almost 2 years ago. I just had my small collection of battery powered fluorescent lanterns, and I never thought it would expand past that. Now I have a small collection of mains-powered fixtures and lamps for them. (Although my main interest is still in the small T5 lamps. )
