My husband found a Day-Lite fluorescent fixture in his basement shop. It is clearly vintage, although we cannot be sure from what period. It weighs a ton! Does it have any value to enthusiasts or collectors, or should we just dispose of it?

Down with lamp bans!

Hang on to it or send it to a good home. Am I correct in thinking it's a 4-footer? If that's the case, and you decide to use it, do NOT use the "energy saver" 34-watt lamps. Only use 40-watt. The 34-watters can kill preheat ballasts. They'll work for a brief test, but don't use the fixture for extended periods of time with those lamps. This is assuming your fixture still has preheat ballasts, which it looks to have judging by the presence of starters. Newer rapid start and electronic ballasts are generally compatible with 34-watt lamps.
If you want to keep it, I suggest testing it, and if it works, you could use it for lighting in your shop.

I like my lamps thick, my ballasts heavy, and my fixtures tough.

For sure it worth keeping, does ir work? If not it can be repaired with ease with New old stock ballast.

I wouldn't mind giving it a good home, or another member here could do it also. It is from around the 1940s, so it is definitely a keeper.

I would also be interested in giving it a new home as well. Looks like a wonderful vintage preheat fixture.

Thanks everyone for your replies. We don't have any interest in keeping it ourselves. Anyone who is able to come collect (and lift) it is welcome to it. We live in northern central NJ, Morristown/Summit area. Kara

It looks like it is in decent shape for its age. Also, I work in Morristown, NJ and would be interested in this fixture.

It is a nice one, I am glad the owner decided to save it for you. I hope you can save the labels.

Glad you got it! I was willing to pay for shipping/handling but they were afraid/unwilling to pack it.

Good show Luke, can't wait to see it! I say it was pretty nice of who I assume is not a lighting enthusiast to come on here and offer up a vintage fixture to be saved, rather than just junk it as many would.
