Subsidized CFLs - 10 cents each! « on: November 11, 2013, 03:19:22 PM » Author: themaritimegirl
I was in the Walmart in Calais, Maine today, and right at the entrance was a display containing boxes of 10 GE 13W CFLs, for $1 a box! They are subsidized by Efficiency Maine. This certainly surprises me, as I've never even seen incandescents for such a low price.

Quite a few months ago in the same store you could buy a 3-pack of GE 13W CFLs for 75 cents (I'm not sure if they were subsidized). That surprised me then, but this deal blows that out of the water!

Has anyone else seen such deals for CFLs or LED bulbs in their local stores? Personally I worry about the effect of this on the economy - somebody must be losing money by selling CFLs so cheaply. Either that or GE has found a way to make them that cheap, which is a frightening thought.

10 cents a bulb...It probably costs GE that much to make them.

even with the cheapest parts in 100000qty just the board would cost more than 10 cents.
i suspect its cheaper to give away more efficient lamps than to build more capacity.
just accelerates the switchover rather than waiting for them to be replace due to normal failure.

It's not worth a house fire. Good for collectable purposes, but not to use.

I collect exit signs, preferably vintage ones.

I also have a little bit of a thing for light bulbs, too. Of course, hoarding them due to the incandescent bulb ban.
