Great! Was it preheat or rapid start?  I couldn't find the article describing the work on the lamp. Just think if GE had not had problems with it. I guess TODAY with more modern technology we could make this.... but not in China....... ;D >:( :o

I think today the problems would be the same. They could be worked out, but it would make the production very expensive.
And other aspect making this lamp problematic: It would be either quite heavy or too fragile.

It's a rapid start high output type. Yep it is indeed heavy! I'll post a pic of it within a couple days.

Not really, the square lamp was intended to form the fixture's light emitting surface, so not covered by anything else. One could call that a form of "sealed beam" lamp: All optic is inside of the lamp, the fixture only hold it in place and provide the power...
So no losses on any dirty reflector or cover glass, as it become the usual common place with many installations after years of use...

they did indeed have issues.
i remember a place that had 2 cases of spares for their office.4 worked out of 48.
i assumed at that time that they went to air.2 orange glow spots for 15 seconds then nothing.20 years ago they had one working fixture and 3 spare lamps.never thought about preserving them.might still be working though.i put in a good bulb and 3 years later it worked.
