What is this and what is it used for exactly? I've never seen anything like it. Obviously it's used to start sodium lamps...

Bring SOX lamps back!!!

FYI, LED's are NOT the most efficient lighting technology available! Don't know how people keep coming to that conclusion!

My other interests: sports cars, refrigeration, microcontroller projects, computer hardware, and any sort of custom fabrication.

Definitely a xenon strobe lamp.  This is probably for aviation warning beacon or photographic use, although I suspect the former is more likely.
