I recently went to a BIG shop that my company wired about 2 years ago. Out the back of the shop there are lots of 5' Twin Switch Start weather pack fittings. They do not need to be weather packs but i guess someone just thought it would be better! When they were installed the lamps were Halophosphate Edisons apart from one that arrived with smashed lamps and someone fitted Edison 840s. Strange but the fitting with the 840s in has now yellowed really bad! Like you would expect from a fitting that has done 8-10 years!! Why would this be? Has anyone else found this problem?

The halophosphate does not radiate as strongly in the ends of the spectrum, so has less energy in the more energetic blue region.
And the covers (or whatever it was what yellowed) are too much light sensitive. I think not a good material choice for a light fixture...

Edison brand lamps are supplied by a variety of low cost Chinese sources. You will find many tubes having an unusually high output in the UV and deep blue due to variations in the glass transmission and phosphor. This is increasibly becoming responsible for premature yellowing of fixtures.
The same is becoming apparent now in car headlights as well, where polycarbonate front lenses are now widely used - but were introduced after the time that practically all Western manufacturers adopted UV-stop capsules for their halogen lamps. Low cost replacement bulbs that have entered the market more recently are invariably not UV stop and many people have suffered quite severe browning of their headlamp covers. You get what you pay for!

When you say about weather packs, I think it would be better to use them in factorys, as standard. Befor the 400watt halides were put up at work, the old 8 foots were getting very dirty, even with new tubes in, they looked dull. Now, imagine, when installed, they were 8 foot twin weather packs, all that would have been needed was new tubes, and a wipe over of the cover. I wonder why their all designed with them crappy slotted refectors that go black.
P.s, Kev, have you ever heard of a twin 8 foot, with model number, Cryselco 44?

Now you come to mention it me and my mate were saying just the opposite today! People seem to use weather packs everywhere now for some reason. Corridors out the back of a shop...Weather pack, Changing rooms in fire stations weather packs, infact everywhere that seems to be in risk of the tube or light getting knocked people put weather packs??? Problem i have with them is that the diffusers go yellow (Like one ones i was working on today hence the convo about it) and the new lot coming through now are very weak, One wack from a kid and they are hanging by the flex. Also unless you use stainless clips they always brake. I think people should start going back to reflectors and wire grills! Ref the blackening. In the schools and fire stations the old 8 foots that have done 40 years service have gone like that! Some are litterly BLACK BLACK! With the reflectors i have found this spray called foam cleaner! I have been using it on any blackened 8 foot and taking the reflectors down. Spray that all over them then just wipe off! Even the caretakers were shocked how the old fittings came up like brand new! Same in the fire stations, They come up like new!!

I have an 5' SRS fluorescent that is Crysolec. It looks A LOT like a courtney-Pope! I have not seen them in 8 foot twins? Where have you found one of them? And can you get it?

;DSorry mate, just seen it now. Anywho, The insurance company at work have gone mad about the electrics, and now Karl and Mike have to sort it out ![Shocked :o](/Smileys/default/shocked.gif) . Our factory was built in the early 60s, and I don`t know it these are the original fittings, but theres 5 of them left. They have not run for about 15years, just never got taken down, Karl has pulled the first one down and given it to me. He says if this one dosn`t work I can have all 5 of them to make maby 2 or 3 good ones!!! The thing is, they must be old, as the flex connecting them is colourd red, black, and green, but they have bloody huge capacitors in, with SOLDERED connections!!! ![Shocked :o](/Smileys/default/shocked.gif) I`ve put one in the van tonight, (been on 2/10), will have a look at it tomorrow

Did they still have the tubes in? Yes they are VERY old then, Definatly origonals. They will be 125W then with the cap in series with the ballast! 7.2 MF 440V bet you! Looks like you found a use for your 125W tubes! So was the place re-wired when they put the new lights in? I like to try and re-use what is there if it tests out ok because the chances are it is far better than anything these days!

It has, but these 5 have been right up in the roof, above our paint plant, all the lighting trunking now has to have MCBs over them, and the wiring checked. The lights are switch start, not sure about how there wired until I have a look tomorrow, there were tubes in, (yes 125 watt), but they have run until they were, dead, dead!! I hoping, as they are switch start, they will still be ok. Interestingly, the wiring block in them are, red, (phase), white, (neutral)!!!, with the earth on a screw to the body.

OK so i am picturing lighting trunking with 8 foots on that used to run above the new spray booth with a lower ceiling so there 8 foots were eventually in a ceiling void? There is nothing wrong with leaving them up there really but its better for your reasons to take them. See if you can save them all! I bet they work! Infact i know 100% they will!

Theres no lower ceiling, we had a contractor put up the halide lowbays, but left the 8 foots there!!!, but they were all on a switch, "by the door", type of set up, and old wire wound fuses!! Over the years the lighting has been lashed up and down, never realy sorted properly, the electrical inspection team that tested it, found bits bodged in, an junctions all over the show ![Grin ;D](/Smileys/default/grin.gif) , on one part, Karl was telling me, there was NO earthing!!!!

If I can, one of them has a bent body, and being held together by the reflector, another one is wedged between an extraction tube!!!
