Are SLI/H bulbs considered to be rare as 50s fluorescent bulbs? « on: April 12, 2025, 04:29:46 PM » Author: Eleco_SR304
I was wondering if SLI/H bulbs are considered to be one of the rarest LPS bulbs, or even as rare as 50s fluorescent bulbs. If anyone is an expert about this, I would like to know, as only the Alpha 5s which I photographed used SLI/H bulbs, nowhere else.

Usually I collect bulbs (Mostly LED) and some HID ones. I also own a couple of streetlights, but most are made in Poland.

However, I mostly prefer SOX bulbs. LED bulbs in their efficacy will never beat SOX bulbs, in my opinion.

GEC Z9464 90w SOX/LPS

GEC also did a range of streetlights that used SLI/H lamps. They weren't a popular lamp format as they were expensive to buy and not very long lasting compared to SOX lamps.

Not sure what they can be compared with, rarity-wise. I presume you're referring to fluorescent tubes made in the 1950's but I wouldn't bother trying to compare those as they are quite unrelated. But way more British lighting collectors seem to have BC-cap (popular in the 50's) fluorescent tubes in their collections than SLI/H lamps.

I think using North American bulbs, I'd reckon it would be similar in rarity to finding a F90T17 fluorescent or any Power Groove fluorescent nowadays. Ironically the Power Groove fluorescent shared the same base concept as the SLI lamp, a discharge tube with a non-circular cross section. See here.

Thorn also had the alpha 6 sli lanterns, I also believe that the Z9554 was originally sli, but when SOX came along, in its higher wattages, GEC just added a 135w SOX version.

Oh yeah, the alpha 6.

Quite surprising that GEC Z9554 used SLI/H bulbs. Is the 140w SLI/H bulb as long as the 200w SLI/H bulbs? And why didn't they make SLI/H bulbs as long as the 180w SOX/131w SOX-E bulbs or was it because the 180w SOX bulbs were made later so they thought about making 180w SOX bulbs long?

And I don't want to change the subject but Mike Barford seemed to photograph a Alpha 6 in Essex

Still stand to today's day though!

That's nice that there's still an A6 in service! As for the lamp sizes, best to ask @James, I'd say he knows the most.

Seems @James is interested in bulbs...yes, maybe he knows the answer. Does he own any SLI/H bulbs? 60w, 140w, 200w?

I believe he's a lamp engineer, working for Sylvania. I would regard him as the most knowledgeable member on this site about lamps.

I also have some sort of bulkhead fixture designed for the 60W SLI/H low pressure sodium lamps. It uses a fluorescent glowbottle starter to ignite the lamp:

I am one of the few North American collectors who owns SLI/H low pressure sodium lamps and fixtures.

@WorldwideHIDCollectorUSA I don't believe your sli luminaire is soffit, to the best of my knowledge they were designed for surface mounting in underpasses.

I understand that it was not its intended application, but I temporarily installed it in such a way that it acts like a soffit light that provides some uplighting.

Luck for you to own an SLI/H bulbs. These are probably (I think) one of the rarest LPS bulbs in the LPS bulb series...

I have had no luck with the older SO/H low pressure sodium lamps myself.

The only luck I had was a SOX-E bulb that had a bidding. I paid £13.50 for it, quite cheap as the ones without biddings have like £80-£120.

I have uploaded a image of my bulb. It is the first post on "Collection" album of mine.
