SOX has been always confusing me if it's HID or Fluorescent. I'd say they're both but it's probably one of these two options. Questions why I think it's HID or Fluorescent: 1) SOX uses a Discharge tube, just like most of HID bulbs do 2) SOX is literally as long as fluorescent tubes and most of fluorescent lights are long So, any clue if SOX is HID or Fluorescent?

Usually I collect bulbs (Mostly LED) and some HID ones. I also own a couple of streetlights, but most are made in Poland.

However, I mostly prefer SOX bulbs. LED bulbs in their efficacy will never beat SOX bulbs, in my opinion.

Additionally, SOX is at lower pressures, like fluorescent. HPS for example is at much higher pressures.

Low pressure sodium plasma covers the entire arctube. Even low pressure mercury plasma is more constricted than sodium plasma, and is still not an arc. Only MV, HPS and MH lamps uses high intensity electric arcs, so considered HID lamps.

I also think that fluorescent lamps and germicidal low pressure mercury vapor lamps can also belong in this “low intensity discharge” lamp category too. In general, I understand that fluorescent, germicidal low pressure mercury vapor, and low pressure sodium lamps, and neon lamps are all “low pressure gas discharge” lamps while HID lamps such as high pressure sodium, metal halide, and mercury vapor are all “high pressure gas discharge” lamps.

I consider germicidal lamps, neon tubes and LPS more similar to fluorescents, just without the phosphor. If only lamps with phosphor were considered fluorescent, many MVs will also be considered fluorescent.

But neon lamps aren't hot cathodes like germicidal and LPS lamps. Neon are usually either glow discharge or cold cathodes discharge. The rest are hot cathodes discharge, even if not considered an arc.

Even CCFLs are cold cathode, but have phosphor coatings.
