All lights are created equal
|
I keep accidentally discovering that I can have some interesting lamp/ballast combinations with the ballasts I currently have. I have a 100W MH HX ballast and a 400W MH CWA ballast. I also have 2 RS dual F40T12 ballasts if that counts. Any ideas of some possibly semi-illegitimate things I can do with these? I already know I can power an MV lamp on both MH ballasts and power a 100W European HPS lamp on my 100W HX MH ballast. Any other ideas? I know some of you had to have tried something strange. I haven’t heard of anything interesting done with RS fluorescent ballasts, wondering if anyone has any ideas with those. I literally have nothing interesting to do with my 400W MH CWA ballast. PS: I am considering selling/trading my used 400W MH purple diazotype printing lamp (I have no use for it). Is this a good idea or should I keep it just because it’s rare and it was my first ever HID lamp?

HID, LPS, and preheat fluorescents forever!!!!!!

Other good lamps that can be operated with 400W M59 probe start metal halide CWA ballasts include Iwasaki Sunlux Ultra Ace 360W high pressure sodium retrofit lamps, Philips’ 360W Retrolux high pressure sodium retrofit lamps, and also, Philips’ CDM330 AllStart ceramic metal halide retrofit lamps.

Are these compatible with probe-start ballasts?

Yes, they have a neon-argon penning mixture gas to facilitate starting on probe start metal halide ballasts without the need for an external ignitor.

Do you need 400w MH lamps? I can send a few over if that's the case.

MAXIMUM LUMENS!!!

You should try running an 8' fluorescent tube on the 100W ballast.

I think that you will probably need a series capacitor to run the full power 110W F96T12 HO tube on preheat, but the energy saver 95W F96T12 HO tubes should run without a series capcitor on those ballasts on preheat.

Really? Do I just use the normal ignitor for the tube?

You would use Philips S16 starters and wire up the ballasts like preheat fluorescent ballasts and remove the ignitor from the circuit. There was a member on here who had built an 8 foot 95W energy saver F96T12 HO preheat fluorescent fixture using 100W M90 pulse start metal halide HX ballasts with dead ignitors.

Here is the example of a F96T12 HO fluorescent fixture that was converted to preheat using 100W M90 pulse start metal halide HX ballasts with dead ignitors: https://www.lighting-gallery.net/gallery/displayimage.php?album=search&cat=0&pos=0&pid=97709
