School light fixtures « on: March 04, 2025, 06:09:27 PM » Author: NeXe Lights
Not sure if this is the right board for this. But do any of you know where schools put their old HID and fluorescent fixtures, asking because my school recently swapped every single HID and fluorescent fixture with ugly LED fixtures and I want to see if it is possible to collect some.

Check the dumpster. I'm friends with the lighting contractors at my school; they have given me nearly every HID fixture they have pulled down! I actually spoke to an exec at school to get permission to dumpster dive to save one! Otherwise, they would just be taken by the contractors.

Well the contracter definitely took them then as I never saw them in the dumpster, which, is usually open. I wonder what the contracter does with them though.  :wndr:

They put them in their recycling skip or take them to the e-waste tip. Do you know the name of the contracting company or any of the contractors?

You could try talking to someone in the front office (or whatever you call it) to find out who took them down. You can then use Google maps to find their office and go there and to speak with the contractors. If they took the lights to the e-waste tip, they'd almost certainly be gone or buried under more crap.
Good luck!

I could probably do that, but if in the end it's at some e-waste or recycling place, I probably won't bother trying to find the fixtures unless they're visible, even if they let me, as like you said they probably would be buried under a bunch of junk. But I guess it's worth a shot.

Well by looking at the school districts news, I found a article on the LED lighting replacement at my school, and on there was not only the contracter, but even the cost of the whole project on the article for some reason.

The contractor might have taken them to a scrapyard for some extra money.

Anyway if you find out who is working on the replacement project, you might be able to ask them, or the school admin...or salvage from the dumpster. I've gotten old lights from school before.

The contracter is a 30 min drive, so I might just call to find where they put all the old fixtures. Also by "recent" I mean they finished it more then a month ago, maybe 2. I'd be surprised if I could salvage them, but if I can it will be well worth not spending money for fixtures like the ones at my school.

Nice work! Also, if their replacing fixtures at other nearby schools you could ask them to set one aside for you.

Well sadly my school was the last school they had to put LED fixtures in. So I don't think that would be a possibility.
