Self checkout? « on: February 27, 2025, 01:00:53 AM » Author: Cole D.
What store have you used self checkout, and what stores have it in area?

For me, I’ve used it at:

Home Depot
Lowes
Walmart
ALDI
Dollar General
Winn Dixie

Now in my area, Five Below also has it, but I haven’t ever bought anything there, so haven’t used the self checkout.

Dollar General doesn’t allow self checkout anymore. They still have it, but it’s only to be used by employees now, due to theft. But when it was open I did used to use it sometimes.

Also, none of the Publix stores here have it.

Generally, I avoid the self checkouts at Walmart because it tends to give me problems, so it’s easier to just use a regular line. In fact Walmart has given me more problems with the self checkout than any other stores combined.

Lowes has basically made it where you only have self checkout unless it’s the customer service or pro desk. They still have attendants to help, but they got rid of the regular checkout lines with cashiers, and I don’t like it.

My closest big supermarket (Albert Heijn) has it. Scan as you go with a little hand scanner, you can put the stuff right away in your backpack/tote/whatever. Best invention ever.

Up to 10 things you can also scan at the self checkout register without using the hand scanner you take into the shop. But any more and you're asked to use the standard registers.

Lidl also has it, but no hand scanners so it only makes sense if you're grabbing a handful of products. The self checkouts aren't designed to hold a shopping cart full of groceries - that's what you have the standard registers with conveyor belts for. Same goes for Hornbach diy store.

One small annoyance in all these stores is that you have to scan your receipt before the gates at the exit will open. I've done it countless of times but still i'm used to putting the receipt in my wallet straight away. Cue me having to fish it out again. To save on paper, some stores also over short receipts that only have a bar code, the number of products and the total amount paid - because many people don't want a receipt.

By far the most refined system is that of Decathlon. Every product has an RFID tag and you just throw your purchases in a kind of bin that has an RFID reader, which scans as it drops into the bin. I reckon if you have a tote you can also put the tote in there, and then put your stuff in the tote.

They don't have built in scales here, like i've heard some of them in the USA have.

Walmart here has some self checkouts that have a conveyor belt, but I’ve never used one of those.

They used to have these security gates at the entrances ghat would open on entering but if tried to exit through it would sound an alarm.

They were an annoyance and didn’t really do much good being as large the front of the store is, and shortly after they were gone.
