Mounting a NEMA or Cobra head street light on drywall « on: February 22, 2025, 01:26:41 PM » Author: Cfl3028
Hello fellow enthusiasts and collectors! I've been wanting to put up some fixtures in my house for display :hpscobrahd: :gumbal:. I've seen many YouTubers do this, and I'd imagine many of you have installed them indoors for display, whether it be on exposed beams, rafters, or on drywall(every single room in my house is drywalled/ finished). I was considering mounting up one of my AEL115s on the wall, but even that lantern is quite heavy and could fall or cause damage if not fastened correctly.

What's everyone's methods, preferred hardware, and precautions for going about doing this?

Just make sure you bolt it directly into a stud!
Do not trust any of those various mollybolts/drywall-anchors/etc that are meant for mounting things to the drywall itself. They are not safe for heavy objects.

@xmaslightguy Thx man, I always try to drill directly into studs for mounting heavy fixtures. All my garage fluorescent shoplights are suspended with metal chain, with hooks drilled into the ceiling studs( rafters?). I have those small Lithonia lighting arms off Amazon I saw YouTuber JordanU use for his outdoor AEL115 installations, and am using one to hold a 50w HPS GE M250 Cobra to the upstairs balcony.

I've also seen YouTubers such as Parrot175 mount lanterns using metal pipe with threading and a round piece that can be drilled to a wall. Not sure the exact names of the pieces but I can try finding a screenshot of said hardware and installation. I'm not sure how secure using this the of installation is though. What does everyone think?

@Cfl3028 - You could make a mounting plate out of wood or metal and attach that to your studs, then mount your luminaire to that.
