When I was a kid I used to freaky enjoy pushing the shopping cart when we would go to the store.
I remember at Food Lion, they used to have these shallow carts with a gate on the front that could drop down. When you got to the checkout, it didn’t have a conveyor belt. The cart pushed over the checkout, and the cashier would open the gate and start unloading it.
I have noticed how some stores, usually department stores, have smaller carts that are shorter in length, and usually have two baskets, one on top and one on the bottom.
At Winn Dixie they have both the longer carts and the shorter ones with two baskets. They have more of the larger ones though. I see people using both types though when they shop. I think the smaller ones must be meant for smaller shopping trips. Also the shopping carts there, have two cup holders for some reason, on the handle.
Also I never put anything on the bottom rack of shopping carts, because I’m always afraid that I’ll forget something on the bottom and forget to pay for it. One time at Publix I forgot I had something on the bottom, but the cashier saw it and I was very embarrassed.
Years ago, I remember grocery stores used to put a directory on the shop of carts, with the aisle numbers of certain items, but I don’t see stores do this anymore, at least here.
I remember when I was a little kid, the Walmart used to have a yellow Little Tikes toy shopping cart next to the others. Sometimes my mom would let me use it and push it around the store, if we were not buying much. One day we went to use it, and it had baby crap in the seat of it! 🤢 So we did not get to use it that day!

We used to have plastic carts with a sort of honeycomb at term at some stores, I remember Walmart having them. I think some discount stores still have those kinds of carts.
Most all supermarkets and other stores have the plastic hand baskets too. I have seen those with the long handle and wheels at Five Below.

Shopping carts at Walmart have been a pain recently. Almost each and every single time I grab a cart to shop at Walmart, I end up getting a cart with bad wheels. Each... and every... single... time. So I end up having to muscle the carts towards the direction I need to go, even if I'm simply walking forward. Funny how this works though... if the shopping cart is working as it should, I'm that one that takes a ride on the shopping cart towards the car after I'm done shopping. lol... high speed... just like when I was a kid.

That’s funny, the exact same thing tends to happen to me at Walmart too, the cart will be really stiff to push or wants to turn to the side. I’ve gotten so many crappy ones there I figure they must all be worn out. 🤣

What makes this even funnier is the fact that I have never encountered this issue at my other main store, Meijers. lol

I remember those high shallow carts. The Safeway and SuperValu stores had them when I was growing up. The front end opened like a tailgate and the cart fit just over the end of the check stand, making unloading easy. Also, the basket part would hinge upward when the carts were nested together. I've seen the smaller two-level carts around more recently. The local Fred Meyer stores have them. I call them sport carts. I usually grab them when they're available. When Pace Membership Warehouse first opened up, they had large carts with pneumatic wheels. They rolled so smoothly. A year later, when Sam's Club took over the store, the pneumatic wheels got replaced with conventional hard wheels. The Fred Meyer stores back home don't have directories on the carts, but they do have advertisement cards on them. Some are internal advertisements, but some aren't. The one that comes to mind are aged and sun faded ad cards for a local relator still in the carts. I'm sure they've been there at least 10 years.

Yeah the Winn Dixie here used to put those advertisement cards on the carts as well, usually for car dealerships. They don’t have those or the directory anymore though.
Although, the Publix and Winn Dixie still put those paper advertisements for the rewards programs or Fresh from Florida and other items on the front of the carts, where one faces the inside of it and one on the outside.
I remember years ago Publix at least, used to have those huge carts that had two green plastic seats on the back with seatbelts and they usually had a fake steering wheel for each seat. My mom always hated those things and said they took up too much space in the aisles. I haven’t noticed if they still have those or not, usually there would just be one or two at each store.
Also some Winn Dixie stores have miniature shopping carts for kids that also have a red pennant on a long stick that says Winn Dixie on it. I haven’t seen those in most stores but a few do have them.
The Belk store here has the mini shallow basket carts but with just one basket, and the handle, instead of one long handle, has two small handles with rubber grips.
