Why in modern split wall air conditioners, the inlet air vent is at the top of the indoor unit like in the unit in the attachment?
90's wall split air conditioners, had the inlet air vent at the front of the indoor unit which was much better.

But the problem with a top located inlet air vent is that the space between the top part of the indoor unit and the ceiling is limited to from few inchs/cm, and the top part is very prone to become dirty compared to the front part of the unit.
With a front located inlet air vent, you can install the unit tightly on the ceiling, on areas that it hard to install the unit otherwise.

Dark dusty air inlet grille on the front of the indoor unit front just looks ugly. Aesthetics is probably the reason. Also, to separate inlet and outlet further geometrically is a good idea.

Also: The air inlet grille are much harder to clean when it is at the top of the unit rather than at the front of it.

The asthetic could be the prime reason, then the need to cram in larger surface condenser, so there is lower temperature drop betweent the air and the medium to improve efficiency, I would also guess the air filter screen in the top intake units would be placed horizontally, with the dirt lying on the top of it, so when manipulating with it (to clean the filter) it creates less mess.

Regarding the dust I don't think there is any difference. Usually there is nothing on top of the ujit really generating any dust, all dust just comes with the air it is sucking in. And if it passes certain amount of air, it s going to accumulate corresponding amount of dust either way. Include the bottom intake drop ceiling units (there the dust just rains off down once you touch it when the fan is off).

Here is an older wall A/C with a front air inlet vent: https://www.lighting-gallery.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-117797
Older ones had multiple ones like this one: https://www.lighting-gallery.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-195196
When the air inlet grille is at the top, it absorbs much more dust than when it is at the front, as the top part, being horizontal, always gets more dust than the front part, which is vertical. Also, being close to the ceiling, this contributes to the dust absorption.

In fact, in a modern AC, heat exchanger (evaporator) coil takes large part of indoor unit, and is bent as an arc around long cylindrical fan drum inside. So heat exchanger still uses both frontal and top surface for intake. Air filter is bent in an arc too.
