GE is closing down its last A-19 lamp assembly plant in Winchester, VA. The last manufacture date is September 24 th. The Canadian plant is also closing on the same date. Operations are going to Mexico, at the loss of 200 American jobs and an unknown number of Canadian jobs.
Its a sad ending. In recent months I have been seeing an increase of GE bulbs made in Mexico and even some from China. The GE A21 bulbs (150w and 200w) started coming from China rather than Canada recently and they look cheaply made! The ones from Mexico don't seem to have any compromised qualities though.

Disgusting. Anytime the government interferes with the free market, this is exactly what happens. I am not at all a fan of incandescent and am not really a fan of the modern compact fluorescents either, but the damn free market ought to dictate what is manufactured. Our country makes NOTHING here that was INVENTED here! Radios, televisions, fluorescent lights, incandescent lights, tractors, pickup trucks, telephones, computers, power tools....yep, all chinese or other imported junk now.

One more reason to buy Sylvania lamps. As far as I know, A19s are still US made. I haven't seen US-made GE A19s in a while now! They have all been Canadian.
Are there any U.S.-made CFLs, one-piece or PL style in current production?
Just a side note about telephones, I only buy Cortelco phones, made in Mississippi! At least the 2500 and 2554 are US made, I don't know about the others.

Sylvania is even turning its US factory into a halogen energy saver factory. No, there are no CFLs made in the USA, not even PLs.

That is sad I just saw the segment on NBC World News tonight. What in the world has come? We are now dealing with new set of pollution, perhaps more toxic pollution to make and dispose CFL's! Yes, I know that it add insult to injury that the third world will make crappy incadescent bulb that would add more pollution due to it's quality issues.

So Sylvania will also stop to make incandescents in the US soon? First Philips, then GE, I guess times goes by... Governments do what they want with the world, only to keep the power! Come to think of it, we're not so far from monarchies...
Maybe they try to force us to change for CFLs, but we're not forced to buy them! That's what I do, I collect all working light bulbs and fluorescents I find, with some luck I'll have to buy much less CFLs, if not none!

I don't like CFL's at all, period. They make me feel sick and plus they take too long to warm up which is why I don't use them.

Tonight I made a little "ceremony" for myself with the end of Canadian General Electric products. In my basement I lit nothing but a small F14T12/CW and a 40W incandescent, both from Canada. I stayed in front of them until 8:00:00 PM exactly (a few minutes ago), time by which I turned them off.
Nothing really useful LOL, but here in Canada a big page is turned today. It was worth it ^__^

It happened officially, it was annouced that the Winchester Lamp Plant has now ceased operations. Some of the machinery will be moved to Mexico. Workers entered the plant today saying goodbye to each other and picked up their personal belongings and tools before leaving the plant for the last time. GE cited overcapacity as the main reason for the closing, as sales of incandescent bulbs are way down compared to five years ago. The factory in Mexico can now fill in the rest of the orders. Here in California, about 40% of porch lights lit at night have CFLs.
Sylvania still hasn't said if their St Marys plant will close, their current focus is retooling it for the Halogen SuperSaver bulb. But how long will it last? The LED market is said to be going to be huge. Although I have not been too impressed with most LEds I have seen so far.
