Joslyn help « on: October 30, 2024, 12:39:32 AM » Author: Baked bagel 11
I have just bought a Joslyn head (https://www.ebay.com/itm/235666944676?) (Canopy Jrrt and head Cs3). I was wondering where I could find a jones socket incandescent lamp or pictures of one (out of curiosity). I was also wondering if anyone knew about where I could find a teardrop bowl which would fit the canopy (something like this https://hdl.huntington.org/digital/collection/p16003coll2/id/65395/rec/26 ).

The comment you made on rlshieldjr's post here is jones socket for a series incandescent light. That is what you should be looking for.

Good luck finding a glass on its own though. It's far more common to find a complete reflector/glass assembly.

Those pictures of lamps I linked are series incandescent lamps. The jones socket is the (or the type of) socket that series incandescent street lights used. I could be wrong, but the jones-type is the most common (or even the only type) of series incandescent street lighting socket out there.

Apologies for my lack of socket information, is there a specific type of base which would fit into the jones socket (I would imagine a blade like base) or can a mogul just fit into it?

Another question which I have been wondering for some time is, what is the difference between series incandescent and, I would assume, multiple incandescent, and how this determines the type of base used? Do they require the mogul adaptor?

The series incandescent lamps have regular mogul base (E40 for that Australian one of course).

Series incandescent lights run off a constant current regulator, with a maintained current. They are wired in series, but with the help of the jones socket, the series circuit can run even if a lamp burns out or is removed. Any problems with a series string can take the entire thing out of service. The lamps are mogul base only (afaik, I haven’t seen a E26/E27 series lamp yet). You can light a series lamp by itself if you can provide the proper voltage and amperage for it.

Multiple is basically standard incandescent street lights wired  in parallel at mains voltage from a normal stepdown transformer. Basically normal incandescent street lights with special street lighting incandescent lamps. They come in medium and mogul base (I don’t know if these were ever available in your country). You can use regular lamps in them if you want to. And as for how they work, well, if one lamp burns out, the rest will stay lit, and any issues with the wiring or a light likely won’t stop the rest of the lights from working.

Oh, nice! Yeah I saw that listing, too bad it’s missing the refractor, but hopefully you can get one.

I’d like to get me a gumball or clamshell streetlight eventually. There was one in there several years ago for cheap that I wish I’d gotten.
