I've discovered that the socket of my GPT SC9 SET surge protector, began to swell and crack. What can cause this?

It's either heat or a capacitor bulging, or both.

Here are the inside of this surge protector: https://www.lighting-gallery.net/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-199688There are no special component behinds the socket. And the closest component to the socket is the MOV, which is unfused.

Plastic shouldn't bulge and crack with age. Maximum it should be yellow from UV and blue light, but it is still white.

It does. Many (mainly cheap and/or exposed to sun/heat) plastics crystalize and then start cracking practically this way.

For example, look at my capacitor here, it had a thin coating and was right next to the hot ballast, cracking it. https://www.lighting-gallery.net/gallery/displayimage.php?album=8024&pos=31&pid=235415
