6500K LEDs « on: June 30, 2024, 02:06:04 AM » Author: ace100w120v
Anyone else notice these finally becoming more popular?

I happen to be one of these crazy nut jobs who actually LIKES that for all my indoor lighting. CFLs in such flavor were relatively commonplace, but when those segued to LEDs it seemed like the highest CCT one could readily obtain was 5000K. (Which I would buy by default).

Now, I've finally seen some 6500K units. Lowes is stocking the GE 'Cool Daylight'in both A19 and various decorative types. Costco seems to be carrying switchable-CCT A19 snow cones which range up to 6500K. Needless to say, I've been buying lots of both.

Cheap LED Assassin

We had 6500k as the main colour since fluorescents existed. But I do hate bright 6500K led streetlights glaring through the night.
I don't know about the rest of the world, but here the colour was present way back. Also, I think that 6500k phosphor is cheaper to mass produce, since majority of cheap chinese lights are offered in 6500k and 3000k.
I still have not seen common 5000k leds, fluorescent or hid yet, but it would be nicer.

Most LED road lanterns in Haifa are 5000-6500K, and in Kiryat Ata 2700-3000K.

The question is, what is the color quality of these 6500K LEDs.
Because for long time, 6500K were the cheapest "white" LEDs with just a tiny bit of phosphor, so the blue primary LED line extremely strong and practically no red, so CRI in or even below the 50's.
I would be curious, if the color of these CCTs was improved, or if it is essentially the same as it was in the early days...

Oh. You'd like my undisclosed country then. Everyone uses 6500K LEDs because it's pretty much the only thing you can find at general stores and supermarkets, small town stores don't have many options available so you can only buy those in different wattages with 12 usually being the highest (replaces 100W).
Streetlights are flashbang bright 6500K, the most popular outdoor lighting are the square floodlights in cool white.

Warm costs more and is nowhere near the colour of an actual incandescent, claims to be 3000K yet it's around 4000K which is "neutral" white.

In my eyes the CRI is terrible, everything looks pastel and washed out, my skin looks almost blue under some of the lower quality bulbs.

CFLs weren't really a thing here, they were always super expensive compared to incandescents so they didn't saw widespread use, Chinese LEDs are bulk imported by the few companies that have permits so that's all there is, incandescents both normal and halogen aren't banned but they're unobtanium at this point except for places that have old stocks.

My neighbour bought a FIFTY WATT bulb for his living room :poof:
