Hi!

I am a Heritage Science researcher, and I have found a bulb in an old light-aging equipment in our lab that needs to be replaced. I was not able to find any information about it online or using the forum's search tools, so I was hoping someone would have more information about it to see what would be the best replacement. So far we are thinking of changing the socket in the equipment to fit a modern bulb, or constructing an LED strip system to attach to the equipment.

The text printed on the bulb reads: 61(?) George W. Gates & Co., 100W RS-4/G. The equipment we have is the Sunlighter Model 50 (Test-Lab Apparatus Co.)

Looks like Ge made an RS-4 sunlamp (page 30) http://www.lamptech.co.uk/Documents/Catalogues/GE%20-%20Catalogue%20-%201948%20US.pdf  I'm guessing yours is similar?

Maybe one of those par38 lamps would work?


What sort of UV do you need? I think the shorter wavelength UV leds  are still sort of expensive

Perhaps someone here would trade a suitable modern lamp for the admedium socket

Can you tell if there is any kind of ballast driving this lamp? Or is it all closed up. If you have no access on the lamp's power circuit I'd recommend shining a laser through the back of the lamp where there is no reflective coating and you might be able to tell if there is an arc tube with a filament or not. If not and your 100% sure you can search for some kind of MV reflector lamp that meets the standards of this particular lamp: (100w). Else you can put a standard PAR38 lamp as 'Bottled lightning' said that is the safest option I'd say.

 I'm gonna say this is just a standard 100w R-40 mercury lamp .
