Can I run a 50 watt CMH bulb in  a 50 watt metal halide fixture?, or do CMH bulbs require different gear to run? Thanks

That lamp has the same ANSI code as the fixture, M110/E. So yes it should work.

Most ANSI codes in C and M are compatible with the same ballasts. C is for ceramic lamps and M is for the standard metal halide. Lots of ballasts list both, such as M156/C156.

It is interesting why some American ballasts may be not listed for ceramic MH, cause electrical parameters of the lamps are the same? I have not seen such segregation with 230V style ballasts yet, in fact most are also listed for 100V sodium lamps of the same wattage, or can run them 'off-lablel'.
