I found this, have no use for it, and am very curious to see what happens and how long it will last.

It's never a good idea to run a lamp on a ballast not intended for it. I certainly wouldn't risk it. If you don't want the lamp, I'm sure someone here will take it off your hands.

I don’t think it would actually fail?, its more likely to just endlessly cycle!  8)

What is the color temperature when the HPS lamp is overloaded? Cool white?!

I have to wire up the ballast to a socket. I salvaged the ballast from a cheap yard light (70 HPS) and turned the fitting into a 120V unballasted fitting, saving the HPS ballast and ignitor for further use.

Ok I just ran it up to full temp, and the color is Brett much white, with a bit of orange, better CRI than normal.

Could the lamp explode? When I overloaded some of my EOL lamps, I just operate them outside and control the power from indoors. Or I use an enclosed fixture.

No. The pressure is still much below 1bar unlike HPM or MH. While the arc tube technically can burst in the vacuum, the energy released is low.

So it will just cycle on and off rather than burst. I see.
