6 Foot Two Lamp High Output Fixtures « on: December 15, 2022, 07:10:00 PM » Author: suzukir122
Okay so... I might be letting go of my original 3 footer floating shelf idea. (Once I get a better apartment) The floating shelves stay, but...
the 3 footer fixture idea just might get scraped. Instead, I'm thinking about getting 6 footer High Output two lamp fixtures. Less lamps unfortunately
if I do, but it would definitely be brighter. Normal Output fluorescent vs High Output... for me, High Output will win, each and every time.
So... can anyone find any for sale online? (Preferably on Ebay.)
Once I purchase them, I'll also be on the lookout for FULL POWERED High Output magnetic Rapid Start ballasts as well. More than likely with High OCV, but
that doesn't matter much to me.
Again, High Output is my favorite. VHO is too... and if I go that route -- 135w T10 lamps would be my go to. Never heard of VHO two lamp strips before
though, so I don't plan on searching for any VHO strip fixtures.
-- Anyways, help would be greatly appreciated.

Personally, I like to build my own fixtures for odd length fluorescent tubes.

Yeah... you bring up a very, very good point, @Worldwide. I've been thinking about doing that, for the longest time. But I'm not good
with tools/mechanics, math, etc. I've got to buy a fixture that's already completed. Besides that, I want to also try my best
to achieve that vintage look. I want identical vintage fixtures in tandem with one another.
The building a fixture idea is a great one though, and I do intend to implement it into a different plan... preferably with Circlines.

My GE metropolitan fluorescent streetlight uses this exact setup, 2x 6 foot T10 VHO tubes. Obviously not selling the thing but maybe try to look for something similar.

I would've declined to purchase it anyways, mainly since it's street lighting. I would've also cried while doing so... wouldn't be easy.
But... I'm looking for HO 6 footer fluorescent strip fixtures only. VHO strip fixtures as well if they exist. I should also clarify that
I'm not looking for vapor tight fixtures of any kind.
I'm also gonna go ahead and throw 5 footer fixtures into this. I'm not sure 5 footer HO strips exist, but I won't turn down 5 footers.
That'd actually be even better than 6 footers, honestly, since more lamps.

If anybody knows part numbers for 6 footer HO fixtures, please let me know... so I can continue to search for potential purchases.

Looks like Lithonia and Visioneering still builds them to order. Any Acuity distributor in your area should be able to order the Lithonia products for you, as for the Visioneering products, they're owned by Leviton so a Leviton distributor might be able to place a order for you. If you want VHO, you best option is to probably order a HO fixture and then swap the ballast yourself.

Metalux, H.E. Williams, and LA Fluorescent Lighting seems to not offer 6ft options. Apparently Sim-Kar went under back in 2019.

Lithonia (see attached files for spec sheets):

UNS 2 72HO 120 GEB

UND 2 72HO 120 GEB

Visioneering:

COM 2 72 T12HO 72 R 120

Peerless Electric (of Canada):

LSH0 6 2 65 120 R

Note: May be T8 electronic HO only.

I'd personally just get a 8 footer and chop it down for 6ft but I suppose it might be a bit of a hassle. You can get a pretty stock look if you chop from both ends (preserving the centre large knock out) especially on a model with a continuous ballast cover.

@Joseph_125, the first two posted links failed me, but the last two worked.
I wish I could purchase an 8 footer fixture and chop it down to six feet, but I don't trust myself with cutting metal, or measuring, nor
do I know anyone who knows how to do it professionally.
The 8 footer HO T12 fixtures also seem very tough to find... especially on Ebay. Ebay is beginning to become infested with LED

Hmm I wonder if there's something weird going on with Lithonia's site. I've attached their spec sheets to the first post.

8ft (and 4ft) HO T12s used to be pretty common here. Not online but from Home Depot and Lowe's, you used to be able to go to one and pick them off the shelf. They also had spare lamps and ballasts. Might have to get them used from FB Marketplace or Craigslist now. Unfortunately fluorescent fixtures seem to be hard to find online on eBay for a reasonable price due to their length making it difficult to ship. It look me years before I tracked down a louvered fixture and that was locally.

Chopping down fixtures isn't that hard. The thin sheet steel used on modern fixtures means you can cut them to length with a little effort using hand tools such as snips or a hacksaw. I usually just use the actual lamp I'm chopping it down for as a guide to the length. Then the other thing you need is a drill to drill some new holes to remount the endplates and ballast cover. The 8ft fixtures with a continuous ballast cover are easier to chop down, but the ones with a split ballast cover can also be chopped down, just gotta chop 1ft from each end so it looks stock.

@Joseph_125, I might go the chop-down route. Maybe... but it will be a while... since I plan on moving from this particular apartment unit soon.
But first, I'd have to find 8 footer fixtures. Ebay or similar trusted sites are the only ones I can use -- if my main car were in good condition,
I'd create a profile and search on Facebook Marketplace for someone in Ohio that has the HO 8 footer or 6 footer fluorescent fixtures.
Seems like 6 footer HO fixtures are even tougher to find online than 3 footer fixtures... dang... I would think it'd be the other way around. lol

@WorldwideHIDCollectorUSA... ooooohhh!!! That's good stuff! Very good info! It sucks that I'm far from able to purchase them
as of now, but I will definitely keep those links in mind.
I may also have to go hunting for full power HO magnetic ballasts as well for those fixtures.
Those links may help a lot! Thank you man!

Apparently, one of the fixtures on light bulb depot is a magnetically ballasted fixture just so you know.

Yeah that last link seems to be the one with the magnetic ballasted ones. The only major, major problem with that last link
is that once I purchase them, I'd be getting 14 of them. There's no option to cut it down to 5 fixtures. 14 is far too much
for this apartment.  :'-)
I might have to contact the seller to negotiate about that.

That's a pretty neat find, especially considering F72 fixtures were always more of a special order item. They probably remained magnetically ballasted since they were more niche compared to 8ft HOs which were subject to efficiency legislation like the 8ft SL and F40T12 fixtures were.

Anyway 6ft HOs are easy to find ballasts for since a lot of 4ft HO ballasts often listed longer lamps up to 7ft HO and 8ft HO ballasts generally also listed 6ft HO lamps.
