When did you get interested into street lights? « on: June 02, 2022, 10:59:40 AM » Author: Molly
I started getting into the hobby of taking pictures of street lights in 2018. My first picture was an AEL 125.

I would say my interest in street lights started around 2014. I got my first one in 2020.

I've been fascinated with street lights for as long as I can remember however it really took off around 2014/2015 when I got my first light which was a Sylvania Roadster that I still have.

I started noticing them when I was 2 lol. The pinkish white glow of DX mercury vapor lamps fascinated me as they were different from the typical incandescent bulbs my mom used. At that time mercury was king in California, my time was just before HPS swept through (late 70s early-mid 80s).

On our way home from our first trip to the cinema, when I was 5 or 6, the second junction we went through had a traffic signal with a 'spotty' green arrow. Quite unusual. What I now know as the rare fibre optic arrow, I was fascinated by it. How did it work? It was this very signal that got me interested in lighting. I now own an example of the fibre optic arrow, the pinnacle of my collection.
The night after first seeing the spotty green arrow, I paid attention to the magic colour changing lights that stand at the side of the road. Crimson red to golden yellow. It's because of that, that my earliest memory is of a 2 or 3 year old me looking out the living room window, just as the GoldenRay 535 right outside fired up its SOX lamp.
If it wasn't for that traffic signal, I would have likely ignored all of it.

My interest started in 1977...didn't get my first real street light (Westinghouse Silverliner OV15) until 1986...only paid $8 USD for it.

I got my first two cobraheads back in March 2010. They were both mounted on the same pole and they were being removed during a construction project.

Started photographing them in 2008-2009.

It started when I was 2 years old in 1979. I watched the power company from my living room window put up a pole and streetlight in the development where my parents just bought the house that I grew up in.
My mom said I was so fascinated that I wouldn't move away from that window all day.
I learned much later in life that the fixture was an ITT/AEL series 11 that used a coated 175w MV lamp.
Interestingly enough when I grew up I became an electrician.

Probably at an age of around 2 in the early 1980s. Back when our town was mostly lit by fluorescent streetlights and our small street by incandescent lamps in a street light lantern which later at my age of fife became my very first street light lantern in collection.

Not really too interested in actual street light fixtures, I've always been more into the lamps themselves and how they work; what are the electrical principles of mercury and sodium lighting, for example.

Just as well really, not a lot of room in this place to collect actual fixtures, all the available space is filled with lamps and ballasts

My favorite cobrahead at the time (and still is) is the Ge M400A. I haven't gotten a street light yet, but i will soon
