All lighting except LED rules!
|
My interest originally started in mid to late 2019-early 2020 but it then really took off in early 2021 when I got my 2 AEL 115's. I haven't taken any pictures of any streetlights in my area yet but I plan to soon.

My interest started way back in the day in the kid days... about 7 years old. When my family lived in Illinois, the first part of the year, the street was illuminated by NEMA heads with coated Mercury Vapor lamps. The second part of that year, for whatever reason, they replaced those Mercury Vapor lamps with High Pressure Sodium. I of course have no clue whether ballast replacement happened, but I do remember that I didn't like the fact that they replaced the MV lamps... at all... yet... I also liked the HPS lamps. Especially when I saw one firing up. At that point, that was the first time I had ever seen a HPS start up. And... that's how it begun. I would also find myself comparing street lamps with school gym lighting, but that's an entirely different story for real. haha

Long live the HPS and SOX!
|
When I lived in Massachusetts as a kid I used to always ask my mom to stop when we were out walking or going somewhere underneath every street light after I was about 3 years old. Apparently I wanted to read every NEMA tag, and I especially liked the blue ones (mercury vapor) not that I had any clue what they meant back then. Ever since then and after moving to California I’ve been interested in lighting, and it really all peaked after I discovered and joined this site back in 2019. About a year later I was able to get a decent camera and go into taking photos of lighting as well.

I’ve always been interested in all kinds of lighting, mainly incandescent and HID, and especially all kinds of sodium lamps (HPS/LPS). I’ll tolerate LED but I’m not a fan of it. I’m not proud to say that my city has Devolved to LED.

I got interested into street lanterns at 1995, mainly because of the mystery red color that mercury streetlights exhibits at turning on. However I got interested into the light bulbs only at the beginning of the 2000's when my grandpa from my mother side R.I.P, bought an Osram HWL 160W SBMV lamp made in Germany. This triggered me a hysteria of buying SBMV lamps. Most of my Osram HWL 160W Germany SBMV lamps, lasted 1000 hours, despite run base-up, probably because I had an obsession to hot restrike them, which considerably shorted the filament life.

It's interesting to me from a British point of view, it seems to me that the majority of North Americans prefer MV, whereas I personally prefer the warmer colours of sodium light, particularly LPS, although HPS is good too.
We had MV in the street where I grew up, so I do like them (we have a US 175W MV reflector lamp on as our "Lamp of the Day" at the moment) but my first love of the lighting world will always be LPS.

I started my interest in street lighting back in the summer of 2017, i was like 11 If i remember correctly, My favorite street light at the time was mercury vapor, i thought that it was the only light source for street lights. My favorite cobrahead at the time (and still is) is the Ge M400A. I haven't gotten a street light yet, but i will soon
I will always love HID fixtures, but the ones built for MV has a special place in my heart.
