Why are 5000K fluorescent lamps so popular in Japan? « on: April 26, 2022, 02:02:02 PM » Author: WorldwideHIDCollectorUSA
After looking at some Japanese fluorescent lamp catalogs, I have noticed that there are 5000K CCT options for almost every type of linear fluorescent lamp, circline lamp, and non-integrated CFL lamp available. This has led me to think that 5000K fluorescent lamps seem to be very popular in Japan. Why is this so?

Not sure but in my part of Canada, 5K fluorescent lamps started being popular about 7-8 years ago and now lots of places install replacement 5K LED lamps. Prior to that, you only saw 3K (halpohosphate WW), 4100K and 6500K. Then 3500K briefly in the late 1990’s to about 2005 and now 5K…

There was a trend for a while in North America toward 5000K being “healthy full-spectrum lighting” because 5000K is closest to mid-day daylight at these latitudes…but these were merely higher CRI, higher CCT fluorescent lamps than the typical CW used at the time. Definitely better than cool white, but not truly full-spectrum. Still, that concept that it’s “healthier light” stuck around and 5000K LEDs are much more common than 4100K as a result.

I use 5000K fluorescents in the living areas of my home because they blend well with, and supplement daylight on darker cloudy days but I don’t often use those lights after dark. I have noticed that in Japan, 5000K-6500K lighting is often used day or night. Asian store owners often equipped their US stores with fluorescents of those color temperatures. Maybe a cultural preference or they also bought into the “higher CCT is healthier” idea. It does tend to be more alertness-inducing to have higher color temperature lighting and the eye is more sensitive to those frequencies, you can use fewer lumens so it really does make sense to choose higher color temperatures for lighting in many circumstances.

Interesting information, but this thread should mostly stick to 5000K fluorescent lighting in Japan.

In Japan in general, high color temperature lamps are preferred. Japan is the only place in the world, where most streets are still being illuminated by clear mercury lamps, because of their high CCT.
SBMV lamps are very popular at homes in Japan.

When I checked Japanese electrical wholesalers, it appears to be that clear mercury vapor lamps have been discontinued a few years prior to coated mercury vapor lamps since Japanese market clear mercury vapor lamps are much harder to find nowadays compared to a few years ago.
