Geez! apparently this came from a story i read, and it said that they came from High Mast fixtures!

No, i'll get the link soon. These lamps are at end of life, if i recall, it said that heat destroyed these

Yeah, I wonder if the reflector design was to blame. Some of my HPS lamps had a warning on the sleeve not to use them in a luminaire where the reflector redirects a significant portion of the energy back into the arc tube.
