My 24 MDF 400 volt ac capacitor just blew up on me when I turned on my 400 watt mercury vapor lamp. I was wondering if I can use a 25 MDF 440 V capacitor instead. Will that work?

yes it should be okay, most capacitors anyway have a ±5% tolerance.

What is your ballast: HX or CWA (HX don't requires the capacitor for proper operation as CWA requires)?

With the capacitor being rated at 400V, it's more than likely a CWA ballast. Even if it isn't, it's good practice to ensure the power factor is as high as possible, even if it isn't strictly speaking required.

24uF 400V is the typical capacitor rating for 400w MH probe start CWA ballasts. It's also uncommon to see a 400w probe start MH ballast here that isn't a CWA.

Ok, I'm not really serious and I know what it means when people just use a u, but my OCD kicks in sometimes

Heh, it's mostly because the keyboard I have doesn't have a keypad which means I can't use alt codes for the symbols (not that I remember the codes anyway) and copying and pasting is a bit tedious for short replies.

The Alt codes don't work here, I've just tried but the one for µ is 00B5, which can be followed by [alt] + x to get it to work or type that code into the search box on the character map to bring it up.
